OK. At the risk of sounding really stupid here and " I don't fish in the surf " 70 degrees should be good?
Like I said, I don't fish the surf. I do 99.9 % of my fishing in east Gal. Bay.

When the water is 52* and you get splashed by a wave, it's cold. Other wise the Trout didn't go to Key West on vacation!

It is not only the water temperature but the water clarity. I have hit the surf and have come up with nice stringers but if the water is a sandy color might as well chuck and pray.

I did fish the surf about 30 years ago with dead shrimp. Those Hard Heads tasted purdy dang good at the time! LOL!

They can be pretty good raw mixed with Mullet tossed into a food processor. And maybe throw in the dead shimpy's for scent.

65-70F is good for the surf, I like to soak that dead shrimp for drum and sheephead around that temp or just before. My buddies that came out and fished with live shrimp did catch trout at that time, but not in huge amounts.

You also get a spanish mackerel run around when it hits 70F. They will be busting bait all over the surf for a few days when it is flat, you can't miss it.

I start doing good on the trout when the temps are a little above 70F. Normally in late May or so. Also, some of my best days have been in sandy water, so don't let it stop you.
