?Ciguatera at Stingaree?

I read on MSNBC that a lady ate a grouper sandwich at Stingaree and is suing them because she claims she got ciguatera from it-she's also suing the seafood supplier. Stingaree isn't serving grouper anymore per Vratis. Sorry for both-the lady and Stingaree. Sad that some suppliers don't give a darn where their fish/product comes from. I think we'll be hearing more and more in Texas about ciguatera. The article said that folks should concern themselves where the fish being served comes from. I'm sticking to TF&R. Maybe snaps also.

I heard about that, you wouldn't think people would catch cig much around here because the only big reef I know of is the flower gardens.

I hear stuff about seeing if ants eat a small bit of the fish. I'll stick to giving cuts of big AJ to neighbors first before indulging myself

In Akumal MX, Edgar (fishing guide and restaurant owner) said he could tell if a fish had ciguatera by the way it fought, scales were slimier or whitish blotched and smelled different (while alive). I don't know, but the cuda we caught and ate was pretty dang tasty in a tequila sauce. I hope the Vratis' come out ok--they didn't know.

They stay right at the surface and let you get so close to them that it feels bad spearing them... For the first few times

Ive been to Akumal a dozen times or so; back before they had electricity and McDonalds and they were building Playa de Carmen on the way down there......But,......what in the bird dog f**k is Ciguatera??? I hope its not a venerial disease one could have caught down there back in the late 80's to mid 90's.

It is a bad thing-there is no "test" for it like the STD's you get. You get it from "reef" fish and it's fairly common in reef enviros and no cure for it. Edgar in Akumal swears he can tell if a fish has it by: 1. the way it fights-if weakly, it likely has it; 2. usually has blotches, white spots, or scales are slimier than it should be; and, 3. smells slightly different than it should. Common to grouper and in the food chain in affected areas. Not common in Texas waters and offshore Texas; however, they did confirm a case last year-a guy and his wife ate a grouper they caught at the Flower Gardens and both got very ill with ciguatera. It is a bad thing. Be careful about grouper sandwiches and other reef fish. Check out google on ciguatera poisoning. Yep-Akumal sure has changed-remember when Blue Parrot in Playa was about the only bar and street was dirt 2 lane? You stayed at Solly's place I bet. Man, those were the days.
