  • Winter color selection

Help me understand... I have always heard that the clearer the water, the more natural the lure's color.

In the winter, the water is crystal clear but all I hear from the reel report and other reports is that anglers have been catching well on white/chart or people using PBO (paul brown originals) in chartruse/white or mirolures mirrodine/catch in wild colors like ping and chart.

    Help me out here.

      I have no idea!
A week ago, everyone was singing the praises of pink corkys. Two or three weeks before it was anything chartreuse. The only thing I know how to do is throw everything in my box at them. The one they eat is the one I use.

In west bay the water can get ridiculously clear, but for the most part I fish the more off-color water. That being said I don't really deviate from what I usually throw.

If the water is clear I like to use the Dayglow Corky fatboy, Copper Top Corky Devil or a 4" chicken on a chain bass assassin.

Color is overrated to me! I'm a firm believer in presentation and confidence. Sure, there are those days where they only seem to want that one color that only one guy in the boat has and he swears its his last one LOL. But day in and day out aslong as that bait is presented right it will get hammered. On guided wade fishing trips I see this the most. Most customers who wade are pretty much experience fishermen who will most of the time bring thier wading gear and baits they like to throw that they have confidence in. Aslong as I put them in an area holding fish most of the time everyone will start catching fish on a variety of styles and colored baits.
But, if I had to choose colors I would choose dark colors. I have more confidence in darker color and I think I catch bigger fish on darker colors in soft plastics. Redshad, plums, and blacks. In the winter these 3 colors in soft plastics would be good to go to for me because I dont like clear water. I'm always looking for some offcolored stuff.

Ask JT how many colors he owns LMAO

LMAO....Thats because you dont need a tackle box full of all that assorted array of bullsheet unless you are trying to impress a date on the water of what an experienced pro you are.

My shrimp are usually all the same color. Never had a purply shrimp or a chicken on a chain shrimp-they look brown and pinkish to me.

Presentation over color any day, but if i had 1 color to throw in West Bay 365 days a year...it would be red/ white or any variations. West Bay is a dark colored bay for soft plastics imho!

I agree it is what you have confidence in. I have been hung up on the old style Texas gold rush devil eye made by Brown lures. Also I have a new favorite the Black cat devil eye. Both have a chartuese tail. Love that off colored water!!

X2 on Pimps notes. But this addition is of value. Over time, you will probably find that certain colors seem to work in certain areas. For instance, I throw the Pimp Special in Moses more than any other color. years of fishing in there have shown me that purple works well. As for winter colors, using soft plastic, darks and limetreuse. With the Corkies or hard baits, Pink, pearl/chartreuse, chartreuse/gold/white, or just chartreuse/gold seem to have been my producers over the years. The water that you fish will definitely have a bearing on the color. Red/white and Redshad can be great in the super clear water.

The purple worm revolutionised fresh water fishing back in the 50's...call it grape or whatever...if you had to choose;....if you were forced to choose a bait you would bet your life on; thats what you would choose.
