Welcome !! Get a SOT. Don't know anything about the Pelican, I've always had 14 foot Tarpons which are worth the money if you can swing it, and if you plan on fishing a lot.

I have a boat, but have been using my 14 foot Tarpon for years. Kayaks are a FINE fishing platform...more stealthy than wading and you can get to places a boat or waders cannot. It's only limited by how far you want to paddle and getting stuck with an unexpected hard paddle back to your launch in a hard wind. A yak makes you fish an area thoroughly and not hop all over. The longer the kayak, the faster it is...a 14 foot fits the bill overall. A lot of guys say you don't need a rudder, I say a rudder is a must have...turning in the wind , drifting a shoreline stearing with your feet/rudder. Get the lightest ( more expensive ) paddle you can afford, rig a pulley for getting your anchor to the stern of the yak, an inflatable seat cushion (your butt will be raw meat after several hours without one), two soft sided coolers..one for fish ( you don't want the drag of fish on a stringer in the water slowing you down ) , one for food/drinks, an inflatable life vest, and a waterproof plastic box for a knife, watch, compass, whistle, lens wipes, beer bottle opener ( !), lip balm, pump mosquito spray, ibuprophen, flashlight, etc. within easy reach. A boat bag in the front hatch for things you might need, but not all the time, ie. toilette papper, extra reel/line, lures , big flashlight, duck tape, and such. I keep a hard plastic lure box between my legs, soft plastics in the side pouches. Mind you , I go far and wide in my kayak, miles often , and fish from sunup to sundown. You'll find that you will eventually stay more in the kayak than getting out and wading. Go to the kayak forum and ask questions...plenty of experienced kayakers there. And the website TEXAS KAYAK FISHERMEN is geared solely for yakkers. You'll like your kayak. But, like owning a boat, after getting one, you'll eventually will find out what you like and don't like with your present one and will be better able to see what you want in your next kayak. Good fishing !!

Happy to give my 2 cents worth... EVERYONE starts at the beginning and has help along the way. I learn something new everytime I fish. It's been said before , but bears repeating. Nothing beats time spent on the water. Read all you can , listen and pay attention to others, check out reports, keep a fishing log and have fun !
