A little help from my friends?

I don't live in Galveston, but with the arrival of my first grandson (a keeper @ 4.4lbs) I'll probably be spending a lot more time there. I've fished the surf on the southside of Jamaica beach and caught loads of lady fish, pompano and black drum. What I need is some direction on catching reds, specks and flounder, and anything else that will bite. My brother-in-law lives @ Jamaica Beach, so I'll be fishing the west end regularly. Jumbile bay looks good across the fence, but I'd like to know where I can wade in and fish the flats, I'm boatless unless I drag down the bass rig. I might mention that I'm an avid fly fisherman and would prefer to catch reds and specks on my 8 weight, but I'm not a purist, I'll switch to spinning gear if necessary. Also, I prefer to use artificials or flies. So, here is my request for you seasoned veterans: Flyfishing the flats by wading, using clauser minnows or shrimp pattern flies, in December (Christmas time frame). Can anyone put me on some fish?

Jumbile cove used to be real good on the Indian beach side. It's about as stomped out as sportsman road anymore. Drive in off 3005 to the cul-de-sac and if the water is in the trail ruts, park and swat the mosquitoes on your way around the salt cedars. Be sure to keep your vehicle in sight as the old man on the right will have it hauled off.

Oh and sand eels are my preference that time of year, strawberry, pearl, chick/chain. I'm confident in my soft plastics on a 1/8 oz. Jig.

Btw, watch out for stings on the way in. Breeding ground and they get aggressive during breeding season.

Can you access Jumbile cove off of Bob Smith? There is a gap in the fence by the last house where the break water is located. Can I 'legally' access the cove from there or should I take a yak around to the wading area? Hopefully there will be good fishing in December?

If you want to wade through knee-deep mud and be out of ga s before you reach the water, have at it. I'm 62 and would not do it. Now back in the day I would catch some gators with mud on their belly. I'm just not that mad at 'em anymore. The other side has some harder sand bottom and easier on the knees. He's probably gone now, but there is a 6 foot bull that likes to fish there too.

Thanks, H. Maier. Not knowing the area, it always helps to have some tribal knowledge. I've been stuck in my waders up to the knees in some mountain streams and it isn't fun. I think maybe I'll kayak over to the west side of Jumbile and wade from there. Of course that 6 foot bull doesn't sound like fun if I plan to wade. Is there any other places where December fishing is productive?

Caranchua and Dana's are also good choices within close proximity. Get you a hook and line map plot out a pattern. The kayak will help you immensely.

I can access Caranchua cove from Jamaica Beach, but, can you park on Park Road 66 to access Dana cove or is that another tow away zone? Don't want to intrude on someone's privacy, but I'd like to wade or yak the area where I can have good probability of success.

You can access Dana through the state park. Pay a few dollars and park most .anywhere.

I used to wade and yak the park a lot. I think the fee is still $5 and the annual state park pass is around $70. If you fish there much it's worth it. There are two good put i s: one into Oak Bayou and the other into Lake Como. I always felt like my car was pretty safe since the rangers and staff patrol it pretty regularly.

There have also been quite a few gators around the grass at Indian beach so be aware when ur out there.
