I had to google flounder in Ireland to see if they have the inshore flounder like we have , and they do . Like here an incoming tide would be best . Maybe the water too clear . Ask the locals where the flounder might be . Google flounder fishing in the county you are in . Pretty cool that you are gigging in Ireland . People go out here and not see flounder . Keep at it .GEORGE A. BRANARD, COLOR SERGEANT, CO. L, 1 ST TEXAS INFANTRY, HOOD'S TEXAS BRIGADE, C.S.A. : S.C.V.

Thanks for the reply plugger, according to the fish estimate report for 2011 there are a healthy flounder population in the area that i was gigging, i to waded the incoming tide up to my waist for 2 miles of coastline all sand, a bit gutted you beat me to it plugger. I could wade further at low tide, should i try low water instead? I used to tread flounders in the uk about 30 years ago, catching them with my feet.

Thanks for the reply Curmudgeon, iam open to any advise about gigging being a novice, wouldnt want to wade any deeper than my waist in the dark, i just dont think i was reaching the depth for the flounders, using a 1800 lumens gigging light. Can i still see the bottom with the gigging lights in murky water? thanks.

Most times here I'm lucky if I can see much past a foot deep. Most flounder I gig are in less than 12 " of water lying in ambush for bait to swim by. I have gigged some deeper but not very often. No idea when it comes to over there. I know here there are certain times during the year when it's not worth even trying due to water temp / clarity issues and the fact that most of the flounder have moved out deep to spawn. I'd imagine it would be the same over there. I'd hang around in a bait shop or 2 and ask as many local guys as you can for advice.
Good luck!!Shut up and FISH!!

Usually you gig in water about knee deep . The fish are in shallow on the oncoming tide . The tide is bringing in bait and its easier for flounder or any fish to attack bait in shallow water .GEORGE A. BRANARD, COLOR SERGEANT, CO. L, 1 ST TEXAS INFANTRY, HOOD'S TEXAS BRIGADE, C.S.A. : S.C.V.
