  • New to Galveston fishing

Grew up fishing live shrimp with my dad, but am now looking to learn to fish if fervent kinds of plastics (no luck yet). Relatively new to area, been out to the bay a few times, and love it. Any info to improve my luck is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to fwe!! Good and knowledgeable guys on here. Learn how to read the tide charts. Thats 70% of the battle. I refuse to use live bait. Artificial here!!

Thanks guys. Spent many years on the lower laguna working a cork with live shrimp while drifting. I've done it a few times here in Galveston, but quickly found the shallow reefs on west bay and haven't been back (to west bay). I normally hunt during the winter, but after some reading, I'm more interested in trying west bay again. I'm a little hesitant to navigate through there again, so I think I'm going to try to find some wading spots during the break, starting tomorrow morning. As far as reading the tides, what specifically am I looking for? And what are some rules of thumb for the area?

Welcome to the site! Just get out there and explore and fish, everything else will fall into place. Get you some gulp shrimp and put them under a poppin cork. Or get you some gulp swimming mullet and put them on a 1/4 ounce jig head and do a straight or jig retrieve, they will get you started in the artificial world.

Corky is the way to go now, but it may take some practice. Just remember if you use these work they as slow as possible (working for me).

I appreciate the advice. By corky, are you referring to a Paul Brown Original? Stoppedmat an academy to check them out after reding multiple threads on them.

He's right. Gulp under a popping cork is a great way to get started with soft plastics. You can also check the TTF site for videos on how to work soft plastics on a jig head.

As far as tides, movement is the key. This is my favorite site for tides http://www.tides4fishing.com/us/texa...beach-west-bay

There are also some incredible articles here on the site http://www.fishwestend.com/west-end-anglers-news/
                        Good luck!

You might also want to check out the Trout Support DVDs. They're worth every penny.

Thanks guys! Any particular DVD you would recommend. I picked up some gulp and a corky, and am planning to head out tomorrow. I'll Che ck out the tides and will plan accordingly. Cheers
