  • New guy, will need lot's of advice

Hi, my name is Cole and I hail from Minnesota. I joined the group because starting the end of the month I am going to be camping at Galveston Island State Park for two weeks. I have been in the area before (I have relatives in Seabrook), but have never fished down there. I will be open to any and all information that will help to make my vacation a successful trip fishing-wise.

Leave your ice auger at home and bring mosquito spray. Look forward to your visit.

Boy, I don't know where to start. Since I am in the packing/planning stage of the trip, I guess the best "first question" would be what to bring for gear. I would like to bring as much as I can from a fairly substantial equipment inventory at home, and avoid the expense of purchasing something I already own.

If you have a kayak, bring it along. There are 2 really good put in spots at the park and you can cover a lot of ground from there.
I'm sure more will chime in, but here's a starter list:
Breathable chest waders (sock foot is best because some of the wading spots are muddy and tend to pull off non laced boots)
            Wading Boots
Thermal underwear& fleece (for under the waders)
            -Or-
            Neoprene chest waders

            Wading jacket or decent windbreaker
2- Light to Medium action rods (7' or less) with accompanying reels (whatever you prefer)
Wading belt and or shoulder tackle box for wading
            Landing net or Lip gripper
            Stringer
            Some jig heads- 1/8-3/8 oz
            Some soft plastics
            A few topwaters
            A few suspending twitchbaits
            A popping cork

If you want to throw live bait, you'll want a flow thru bait tank

            Sunscreen
            A hat or visor
            Bug Spray!!

That's cool coming all the way down here to camp and fish. GISP is a great place as far as gulf coast locations are concerned. It may be a little boring to some. Flat, sand and mud, and full of mosquitos but that is what this part of the world is like. Good fishing in the area.
