  • Recently purchased boat owner - bay enthusiast

Have been reading and monitoring posts, just purchased a 2004 21 Shallow Sport and thought I should get serious and join the ranks.
I am still learning the operating characteristics of the new boat. It has a 150 Yamaha VMax engine mounted on a jack plate with hydralic steering. With 2 take off and landings under my belt I realize it is a lot different than my old McKee craft.
One issue that I am addressing is that the motor overheat warning has sounded twice on my second outing. I changed all the fluids and filters, installed a new water pump impeller and thermostats prior to taking it out, the rig has less than a 100 hours.
It seems to me that the engine sits so high up on the transom, even with the jack plate down that the water pump is at the water line. Thus it has to prime itself when you start up. When I would start and advance the throttle to 1000 I did not have a problem, it i let is idle it would not see water out the tel-tale hole (only steam) and it would not be long before the overheat warning went off.
I contacted Shallow Sport and received NO feedback. I took to boat to Meeks Marine they are checking my pump installation and have a mod they do to shave the pump housing and tighten up the clearances.
Any Shallow Sport owners out there have an issue priming there pump.
    Glad to be here.

Sorry, I guess I was supposed to introduce myself. My name is Craig and I live and have a business in Pearland. I grew up, up north ---- Aldine! We typically rent a house in Sea Isle each summer and like the west end of Galveston. It is easy to get to coming from the San Luis pass side. With my old boat I fished Chocolate and entered West bay from the north end coming out of Chocolate bay. Not sure I trust my memory enough to take the new boat in through Chocolate. In addition there was always that stain and discoloration that came with running through Chocolate Bayou.

If it steaming at the p-hole turn it off. I suspect the motor is not low enough. Also try only starting the motor up with the tilt all the way down and the jack plate lowered all the way. My motor seemd to spit water faster when I start it up this way. Welcome aboard

                      Thanks for the welcome.
In response to Kenny I do not have a cavitation plate.
