I have to slightly disagree kenny. It might be low self-esteem, but it looks like something else to me. We all went to high school with a guy that still bitches about the coach. "You know I would have made it if it weren't for that coach. He totally held me back from [scholarship, getting drafted, etc.]" It's never said individual's fault for being fired or not getting that raise, his boss is just a jerk.

In my opinion, this is what a union is. Just a collection of individuals that weren't going to greatly succeed individually. They formed a club and forced said boss[es] to give in to their demands. When the company begins to falter due to high costs, they then blame outside factors. Again, it has to be someone else's fault. Look at the auto industry. Instead of looking at any causes, the simple argument is Japan offers a cheaper and reliable car. It's infuriating that these union guys can't see past their own personal concerns yet complain how conservatives don't care about helping others.

I don't give a rats arse if people want to join a union as long as the state is an open shop and allows non union competition on all bids. (especially state and federal government bids) Public sector unions and closed shop agreements should be outlawed in a free market system. If Congress really desires to straighten out our country's fiscal problems, one area that would contribute greatly to reducing our federal spending and decreasing our annual deficits and national debt would be the unions. The unions in America should be rendered illegal and eventually abolished permanently. When labor unions were started over a half century ago, they were sorely needed. This need was because management took advantage of the workers with hiring child labor, working people long hours at low wages, and providing no benefits to employees. When the unions were organized, Congress passed child labor laws. The unions, through collective bargaining, were able to negotiate better wages for workers and also negotiated better working conditions and benefits. Hence, the unions were good at that time period of our history. However, as the years passed, the pendulum swung to the other extreme. Now, unions are taking so much advantage of workers and management that they have now become the bad guys. For example, here is a list of what now characterizes unions:

• Unions have co-opted the Democrat Party and run that party as they so desire because of the multi-millions of dollars they contribute to Democrat campaigns.
• Unions are run by union goons who constantly revert to threats and physical violence to get their way and what they want.
• Unions have become a totalitarian organization that does not want states, cities, and companies to have "right to work" laws. Unions want to unionize all companies so they can have a stranglehold on the free-enterprise system.
• Unions tax their members and use most of the money collected to finance progressive candidates for political offices. When the candidates they back win, they are under the control of the unions.
• Unions want to eliminate the secret ballot for their members so they will know who support them and who do not. They get rid of members who do not approve and support their totalitarian practices.
• Unions are infested with leftists, progressives, socialists, statists, Marxists, Maoists, and communists–particularly in their leadership.
• Unions are in cahoots with the Communist Party of the USA (CPUSA), The Mafia, and other such criminal and subversive organizations. When Jimmy Hoffa tried to bully The Mafia, he earned himself a concrete casket, which has never been found. Serves him right.
• The unions, in collaboration with the Democrats, are ruining our cities and states (and now the United States of America) because of their exorbitant wages, retirement benefits, salaries and bonuses for union bosses, etc.
• Companies are forced to raise the prices of their products and services to offset the high labor costs caused by the unions.
• Unions have co-opted the White House by finagling free-access to the Oval Office. The union bosses tell the POTUS what to do. They are so powerful that they demand what they want from the POTUS and get what they demand. The unions now own part of auto companies. Can you believe that?
• New members are forced to join the union and pay dues (taxes) even if they don't want to. The members have no freedom of choice. If they don't go along with the union's program, they are kicked out. So, if they want to work, they must be a union member.
• When they strike, if any scabs cross the picket line, some of them get physically assaulted and pummeled into submission.
• The unions have become a detriment to the safety and security of the United States. The union is a political organization. They couldn't care less about the welfare of their members. When push comes to shove, the goon leadership sacrifices the members. All they want from their members are their dues and their forced participation in strikes, protests, and demonstrations.

So, my dear friends, this is the present condition and characterization of the unions in America. They have become criminal, subversive, and corrupt organizations. They have screwed the State of Ohio and is screwing the State of Wisconsin. They are also working to screw the State of South Carolina. Eventually, they will screw the entire USA. Hence, they should be abolished and barred from existing in a free country as the USA. They belong in countries like Russia, China, Iran, Cuba, Venezuela, and North Korea, not the USA.

I have considered the source of the author giving his opinions or talking points and his views on unions, Boom And Robalo and anyone else that hates unions and their workers.

Like I said before, tell a policeman, fireman, or teacher they are weak and in the real world would get eaten. An agreement is just like a managers employment contract or a business owners mission statement. Its all about compensation on the bottom line.
Ya'll hate unions and I support them. They have kept the middleclass going and when the membership falls, so does overall middleclass pay.
So, my dear friends. The conservatives are petrified of the power of unions and their active participation in the political process.
The conservatives have screwed the middleclass worker and will continue for the betterment of their businesses and profits. And now, to get back at American middleclass, their political contributors have given way more than any union organization since 2010. with the super pacs and the SCOTUS ruling.
Unions have been a part of America since the early 1800's.
No Boom, the unions are not screwing America, its the wealthy and Ol White Men losing their hold on the rest of America.

I just had an epiphany and owe it to you mgesti1, I wish that I hadn't given you that "participation" greenie the other day so that I could hit you again.

I always thought that the unions gave up on detroit and chicago because there was no money left for the unions (still partially true) but now it is clear through my research that it is because the union's work there is complete. Mission accomplished! Those cities are now third world slums that NEED a union just like Russia, China, Venezuela, etc.

My wife, her parents, and her brother are all teachers. I have an Uncle that is a police officer, and I worked on a farm most of my high school years. None of us are union members. My in laws moved down here in the '80s from Michigan because the unions up there had led directly to their still poor economy.

While I (and I assume others) complain about Obama doing a terrible job, I have not blamed him for any of my shortcomings. And not to mention, the corollary you attempted (Obama is our boss) is not very apt. Elected officials should act in our (the American public's) best interest and our will, not in their own interests and ideas.

That's right!! Texas is a right to fire state. Check the pay scales and benefits of teachers in states that are not right to fire.
That's what the conservatives want and also the business owners to never pay decent wages or have decent benefits for their employees.
I don't know who they believe will buy their goods and services if everyone is making minimum wages while they make fortunes and send their monies to overseas accounts. High wages and great benefits make all Americans prosperous. Everyone!!
Politicians do their thing for special interests and power and who knows what else. Barack aint no different. Plenty of blame to go around in spite of what you do and don't do. There are things that affect us that we cannot do anything about. Blame or no blame.

Right.....that's why thousands of people are moving from Texas to California and New York etc, the jobless rate in Texas is one of the worse in the nation and you just don't see thousands of new, big as$ss house and developments under construction in Texas and the economy in Texas just plains sucks......

I'm not sure why you keep lumping the governor in with the rest of us conservatives. Being a member of the republican party does not make one a conservative. Plus, you call out people for bashing the President. Are you upset about people just ripping on him, or are you a proponent of Obama's policies?

And to your "competitive wage" argument: look at those particular state's cost of living statuses. Texas teachers are among the highest paid in the country if you factor that in. Simplified: $45k in Texas goes a lot further than $65k in California. 3 of the 4 teachers my wife is mentoring this summer are from out of state. All 3 of them said they came here to make more money. 2 of the 3 are from California, the other is from Ohio.

The housing market is the big factor. Along with sales tax vs state income tax. And also medical and retirement.
