  • What uses more water? Landscapes or Fracing?

A common criticism of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) is that it wastes water. Los Angeles just became the largest U.S. city to vote to ban fracking. One of the main justifications was water conservation during the current California drought. L.A. Councilmember Mike Bonin said that fracking “uses excessive amounts of water in a drought.” Some lawmakers are even pushing for a statewide ban.

However, fracking uses much less water than other energy sources. To produce one million British Thermal Units (MMBtu) of energy, natural gas from fracking uses an average of 1.25 gallons of water. Biofuels use over 2,500 gallons of water per MMBtu. If the concern of environmentalists is saving water, they should attack biofuels and synfuels.

Fresh water is necessary for fracking since it creates the clean fractures which allow oil and gas to flow upwards to the wellbore. As drilling technology has advanced, companies have begun using more recycled water and this trend is expected to continue.

It takes twice as much water to maintain a golf course for a month than to frack a natural gas well. Put another way, fracking a well only takes the equivalent of 4.5 Olympic swimming pools.

Rusty Todd, professor at the University of Texas (Austin) wrote in the Wall Street Journal this summer that, “Nationwide, the EPA estimates that landscape irrigation consumes about nine billion gallons of water a day. That’s more than three trillion gallons a year, or more than 20 times its highest estimate for the amount of water used annually in fracking.”

Fracking advances have propelled the oil and gas industries which have been the backbone of recent growth in GDP and employment. Without the $300-$400 billion yearly increase in output from oil and gas production, economic growth would still be negative. This economic boom is not confined to the oil and gas industries. Access to cheap, reliable energy has positive ripple effects throughout the rest of the economy.

Five years after the beginning of economic recovery, U.S. employment is still 850,000 jobs below 2007 levels. However, jobs related to America’s oil and gas industry have been booming. Jobs in the oil and gas sector have increased by 40 percent since 2007.

After 30 years of employment declines, more than 400,000 jobs have been created in direct production of oil and gas since 2003, and two million more in indirect employment. Now, one million Americans work directly in the oil and gas industry, and ten million jobs are associated with that industry.

These economic benefits that are supporting the U.S. economy are threatened by overzealous regulations which, as the case with water usage, are based on misleading statistics. Fracking bans only serve to push energy production to more water-intensive sources. L.A.’s recent decision is misguided; hopefully the California state legislature will not follow its example.

NOW LOOK AT THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION-THOSE DUMBAZZES HAVE IMPEDED FRACING AND IF IT WASN'T FOR THE OIL AND GAS BIZ, THE WHOLE ECONOMY WOULD BE IN THE CRAPPER FLOATING AMONG TURDS LIKE OBAMA, WATERS, REID, BOXER, PELOSI AND THE EPA-JUST CIRCLING AND STINKING TO HIGH HEAVEN-PLEASE FLUSH THEM ALL DOWN THE TOITY IN THE NEXT ELECTION AND MAKE THE USA GREAT AGAIN.

Europe has shale gas reserves, Germany in particular. They refuse to explore for natural gas. They have turned off their nuclear reactors in exchange for wind turbines that produce electricity for double the cost. When they get in a dust up with Russia, Putin is going to turn off the gas valve and they will be in deep doo-doo, cold and in the dark.

Beyond the economies of natural gas and the net environmental benefit over coal, there is a significant national security interest in using our own resources. Of course, our government has no ability to form a cogent energy policy. They are too busy raising the pay and benefits for the masses so they can get out the vote.

That's the least common criticism of franking I've ever heard.

        Bruce;

Gasland the movie is fiction-proved over and over that naturally occurring methane existed in the water aquifer in the Dimrock Penn. area before any drilling occurred in the area. Fracing happenned in Giddings in 1977 by Chuck Alcorn (great guy-you would have liked him-very down to earth and pleasant) where he fraced the City of Giddings No. 1 Well and started the boom in the Austin Chalk in Burleson and Lee Counties, which spilled over and went to west of Brundage/Crystal City and east through Louisiana. Ya never once heard about "flaming water" and at least 10,000 wells were drilled and 99% of them were fraced, especially when Horizontal drilling became the "new technology" in 1989/1990. The Director of Gasland is another Michael Moore-one that claims a "documentary" but in reality it is fiction and biased to provoke a response to make money for him-not to expose a "wrong" like the Movie "Silkwood" did regarding the Cimarron Nuke Plant leaks.

The issue is now being dragged to "water use" since the environuts had their knees cut down on the "flaming water" BS-even the hated EPA acknowledged that no oil/gas operation caused flaming water-as "documented" by 'Gasland'. So now the environuts are saying "water use" is bad and using that as their 'newest' excuse to shut down what is considered, and all evidence says, a safe procedure. Yet it's ok for Golf Courses, homes and parks to use 20 times the annual water that fracing would use (and now Operators are re-using water so that number will only decrease over time). They always have an excuse or reason to pass some half-azz stupid law that negatively impacts the economy w/o regard to facts-just BS emotions based on BS lies.

Had Obama pushed NatGas as a fuel alternative instead of giving BILLIONS away to his "buddies" for solar and wind, the entire US economy would be much better than it is today, but again, an ignorant buffoon that plays with taxpayers' money to benefit his friends is what we got and we got screwed by Obama and his 'Buds' like Kaiser (which, BTW, George Kaiser is the Pres/CEO of Kaiser Francis Oil Company out of Amarillo-and he was "Solyndra" and is worth chitloads of $$$$$$$$ and never really needed a dime-just like Warren Buffett-extremely rich-but of course the Mainstream Media seems to ignore that Kaiser's money is that dirty, nasty, stinking oil money-except for what Obama gave him-all $530,000,000).

BTW, the term is "FRACING" not "FRACKING". It stands for "Fracture Stimulation"-aint no "K" in it. ya don't spell Fracture as Frackture-unless you're an idiot or the 4 hardest years of your education was Second Grade.

I noticed you let stand all the incorrect use age of the term in your primary post on this thread. While "Fracing" might be industry standard "Fracking" is common useage as evidenced by your quotes.
Regardless, never heard of Gasland and I stand by my previous statement.

It was a paste from a Mainstream Media-in other words-a biased news organization that has no "X" in its name. BTW, I agree with your "previous statement"-that's why I made the post-because the "flaming water" is just "flaming BS" as to the blame/reason, so now the environuts are claiming "You use too much water" while watering their lawns and gardens (I.e. bunch of hypocrites).

I figured ya heard of the movie "GASLAND"-it even won an Oscar or some Hollywierdo award as a "documentary" which was later proved to be BS, manufactured biased crapola.
