I wanted to share a quick, personal story about health insurance (not health care) for our young FWEers approaching voting age and to first time voters.
My name is Jason. I am 36 years old. I do not come from a political family. I don't even know if my parents vote. I have a son (stepson, so the math will make sense) that is 21 and in the USAF.
As I read the exchanges on this forum, I wonder how new voters register what they are reading. There are some strong views coming from both sides. At the end of the day, we would all help eachother on the water if someone was in need. It needs to be stated that people's political views stem from their life experiences and sometimes their upbringing.
Here is my quick story.....Sometime in 1996, I was fortunate enough to get a job at a local car dealership in Alvin. I would have been 19 at the time. I was a porter that moved cars, swept floors and emptied used oil barrels. After my graduation, I was able to work full-time amd make a little extra money. The following year, I was able to sign up and pay for my own health insurance. Being that age, I had a lot of "first". None of them made me more proud of myself than being able to go home one afternoon and tell my parents that they no longer had to pay for my health insurance. I could do it on my own now. At that young age, I new health insurance was important, but not a right. It had to be earned.
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) will kill that feeling of indepence. Now, you/ we will all have to sign up for government run health insurance wether we want it or not. The right to choose to be insured or not, is a right that American citizens have recently lost.
It bothers me that our youth will not get to expeience making an adult decission to be insured. It has been made up for them by the government (citizens were not able to debate the ACA).
I tried like heck not to use political terms while writting this. I didn't write this to swing you one way or the other. I wrote this to remind you that being an American is a gift. What we all decide to do with the gift is totally up to us. Do you give your gift away to the government or do you covet the rights and freedoms that people from all over the world line up and legaly wait for?
