  • Young FWEers: My Health Insurance Story

I wanted to share a quick, personal story about health insurance (not health care) for our young FWEers approaching voting age and to first time voters.

My name is Jason. I am 36 years old. I do not come from a political family. I don't even know if my parents vote. I have a son (stepson, so the math will make sense) that is 21 and in the USAF.

As I read the exchanges on this forum, I wonder how new voters register what they are reading. There are some strong views coming from both sides. At the end of the day, we would all help eachother on the water if someone was in need. It needs to be stated that people's political views stem from their life experiences and sometimes their upbringing.

Here is my quick story.....Sometime in 1996, I was fortunate enough to get a job at a local car dealership in Alvin. I would have been 19 at the time. I was a porter that moved cars, swept floors and emptied used oil barrels. After my graduation, I was able to work full-time amd make a little extra money. The following year, I was able to sign up and pay for my own health insurance. Being that age, I had a lot of "first". None of them made me more proud of myself than being able to go home one afternoon and tell my parents that they no longer had to pay for my health insurance. I could do it on my own now. At that young age, I new health insurance was important, but not a right. It had to be earned.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) will kill that feeling of indepence. Now, you/ we will all have to sign up for government run health insurance wether we want it or not. The right to choose to be insured or not, is a right that American citizens have recently lost.

It bothers me that our youth will not get to expeience making an adult decission to be insured. It has been made up for them by the government (citizens were not able to debate the ACA).

I tried like heck not to use political terms while writting this. I didn't write this to swing you one way or the other. I wrote this to remind you that being an American is a gift. What we all decide to do with the gift is totally up to us. Do you give your gift away to the government or do you covet the rights and freedoms that people from all over the world line up and legaly wait for?

In short , the more a government dictates what you can or cannot do , the less personal freedom one has .

Power corrupts , and absolute power corrupts absolutely . That's why we have a checks and balances system of executive , judicial , legislative branches , constitution and admendmets to preserve personal freedoms . The executive branch since 2008 with hundreds of executive orders and czars , ACA , has greatly threatened our freedom . The EPA is way out of control also .

Great post Buoy. That was one of the main issues-forcing folks to buy insurance and "taxing" them if they don't.

I'll try not to bash Comrade Obama. The Gummint currently in power believes that you are stupid, ignorant, incapable and must be "guided" in your actions and thoughts as "they deem fit". Sadly, many people do not have the vision or thought that you do-as you go through life, your hard work EARNS rewards, such as your ability to tell your parents that you bought insurance on your own. Many people expect someone to do everything for them and that IMO generates from their family's values that the family teaches. Some families fail at that for many reasons. A fine example is Obama's Aunt Onyango-she came here illegally to attend Obama's Senate Inauguration and never left, she got public housing, disability and welfare while under deportation orders (How I have no idea). She was interviewed on Boston News and was asked why she stayed and her response was "Because the US owes her". Now taking into account that she was a matriarch in Obama's family, one can see the fine values that were handed down to Barack Hussein Obama because folks like his aunt do not work, claim disability, collect welfare and Obama thinks that is great. Whereas your parents instilled true American Values that to succeed, one must put forth effort and the more effort, the greater the reward. It was the American Dream. Under Obama's regime and the voters that support him, the Dream now is to get everything at someone else's expense, whether that be the 47%, big (evil) corporations and spying on every phone call and email you make. Isn't it great that we have such a fine POTUS with outstanding family values!!!
"Hey Hillary, regarding the Benghazi Attack on 9/11-we'll just blame it on that movie, not my total lack of security. By the way, what's so significant about 9/11 anyway-was that a date my buddy Bill Ayers of the Weather Underground blew up a government building?" asked Obama to Hillary. BEAUTIFY AMERICA, RUN OVER A LIBERAL, THEN BACK UP AND SEE IF HE'S DEAD.

            Great post Buoy37!
You are so right in that each person's life and choices molds them into their principles and character.
You are fortunate enough to have a great jobs and a good family. Many do not. As far as is it a right to have insurance or should it be earned ? Consider a drivers license, car insurance, a CHL, or even a hunting/fishing license. All of these are rights or give rights to have one and do what they are issued for. You don't have to have any of them but what a restricted life style you would have. They were started to protect the rights of other Americans. As far as earning them, well yes, you earn each and everyone. Having an affordable health policy for everyone to get health care is the same. If one person decides not to carry insurance and is flat broke and gets injured than does he have the right or earned right to go get medical help that everyone else is supporting and following the law ? And yes, congress represents ALL americans and they ALL work for us in making right or wrong decisions. The ACA is law and deemed constitutional by the courts. Yes, we all can be thankful to be Americans, greatest country in the world.

Health care and health insurance are two different things. The health insurance side of the ACA is what we currently learning about. We have yet to learn how our health care will be affected.

You are totally wrong on that. Health care is dependent on health insurance and the ACA is setting guidelines on the insurance companies so ALL OUR healthcare will improve when we need and use our insurance.
I'm getting a colonoscopy next week and my wife just had a mammogram. Both are covered with no prepay by the ACA . If my kids were still here they would be covered while going to school or laid off or between jobs and will be on our insurance.
The benefits far out weigh all the talking points that the uninformed are spewing out.
Im am so glad that regulations and guidelines have been put on the insurance companies so all are on a level coverage field.

Boiled down, the ACA means you have to PAY to be an American citizen.

Remember we live in The Land of the Free.

                  Errr.....maybe not.

No, you have to pay taxes to be an American. Or file a tax form anyhow. We are still all free.
Education tells you where to work anyhow. No education, no work. Thank god for public schools.

Now that makes us all outlaws!!!!

No, appearently, I pay taxes so the unambitious "Americans" can have insurance. That's not freedom, my fishing friend.

BTW, It's kinda strange how you qualified your statement about paying taxes. Filing a return with zeros on it shows your true worth, imo.

You mean the 47% that Romney bad mouthed ? The Elderly, kids, and the poor who are working but still require assistance because they don't make enough to file.
As far as paying taxes, I'm on SS and retired and still pay taxes. My 90 year old mother drawing what little she gets still has to file on income tax and never gets it all back. All Americans in some form or fashion pay taxes.
Meanwhile the top US companies don't pay any and the wealthy pay very little with their tax breaks. Even Romney only paid 15% which is my rate and his income was on bank account interest only.
We maintain our freedom by paying taxes and help Americans when they need help. I do not see any reason to be upset about helping.

                              Nope. Not everybody pays taxes.
Illegal immigrants and FSA don't pay taxes or ACA
