  • Doe's and their fawns

I just went to my lease to check game cameras and the cameras were loaded with doe's that had at least one fawn hanging around them. I don't want to shoot a doe with a fawn that can't make it on its own, how old should a fawn be able to make it on its own?

fawn hang around a doe till the doe runs it off. Usually the next spring when the doe is gonna have another fawn. id find a baron doe if you want to shoot one.

The one with the two bucks is probably the best shot I've got of two going after each other. The doe and fawn pic is pretty much how the other 199 other photo looks like, with a couple non legal bucks thrown in.

Fawns can make it after 2-3 months on their own. The does will run off small bucks 1st. Natures way of reducing interbreeding and increasing range territories. Make sure there are no buttons on the larger bodied deer. But if they are a spike or a small 3 pointer put them on the ground.
If you are a meat hunter and have plenty of does stick or shoot as many early in season before the main rut. Your chances will increase the buck sightings during the rut.

My neck started swelling this am with this small front. Gotta get that bow out and descent my gear.
We put popups out this past WE and filled the feeders for the youngsters.
          Its almost here.

Lurefisher it's up in NE Texas near Jefferson.

Thanks for the info mgstei1, I strictly hunt for meat, that's why I don't want to take a doe that has a fawn that couldn't make it on its own. I'd rather shoot spikes and older does, but the herds around my place have been managed almost too well, and we only have 3 to 4 year old deer.

Shoot does, don't shoot spots but any thing else put on ground. That one buck on left of above picture is older also. No rack so he needs to go. Does spread in that county have to be more than 13" ?
If you can, spotlight on your place now to get a good deer count on several nights and early and late. 3-5 counts is best.
Average the count and let the county or state biologist know and he will tell you what to take and how many.

I only hunt meat now also and culls unless popa comes out. Been over 20 years since I saw a taker and I missed. I take does, spikes and old small rack bucks 6 1/2 to 8 1/2 old or any that are injured.
I try and age all and I have been fooled more than once.

By the way, don't have any weapon with you when you do the count. And if you have neighbors close by let em know.

That's exactly what my brother-in-law from Avinger said.

                    Doe's and their fawns

Mgstei1 if I had time to spot light this year, I would have liked to do that but I barely have enough time to go up and hunt. I'll try and make time for spot lighting early next season.

Yes in most of East Texas there is a 13" requirement.
