Is a 3/8 jig head too much for the 4in chicken boy ?

Not if you're fishing 20 plus feet of water.

Would 1/4 be good for around 3 ft water ?

The chicken boys I've seen, I'd go go with nothing heavier than 1/8 oz. Good luck.

I use them all the time and not only depending on depth but underwater structure and bottoms. I do use a 3/8oz in shallow water with a more sandy bottom when I am fast bouncing my lure to illicit a strike. especially in windy conditions. 1/8oz is very safe but to be honest with you..... The best jig head I have found to work with Joes lures is the gulp jig heads. they have a unique action to them that really makes the lure respond better in my opinion. The red/white lure with the gulp red 1/4oz is a trout/red killer on overcast days. Here is a pick of a couple trout on that same lure that broke 8.5 lbs.Click image for larger version

I don't throw tails as much as most people but I never use more than a 1/4 oz. I use 1/16 and 1/8 most of the time, especially in shallow water. I use a heavier jig when fishing in higher winds so i can stay in better contact with the lure.

Really its a tougher question to just answer as there are so many different situations that may require different approaches and applications. Before you can really say you have to ask many questions. Water depths, water temperatures, wind, tidal flow, bottom conditions, clarity. There is a million ways too really answer his question.

I use 3/8 to give me distance and bragging rights. 3/8 jig is what the doctor ordered when someone throws potlickers in your potluck...lookout I hear nutt deep is on on the water
