  • The REAL Smacker Report 4/30/13

Hogie70(aka Mr. Diablo), TTUWader(aka The Quick Release King), and myself went out the morning of Tuesday, April 30, 2013.

We all talked the night before and decided that we'd slip up north a little ways and go investigate our favorite spring time spot...Clear Lake. We started out in front of Clear Lake Shores, with only one trout to show. The next stop over by the mouth of Taylor Lake had the same results...just one fish.

After scratching our heads, drinking a beer, and talking things over, we decided to run to the back of Nassau Bay and wade the deeper shell with the bull tide that we had. We guessed right, and finally ended up with some fish. The water temp was around 73 degrees, the clarity was that of a cup of coffee, the bottom was that of gooey mud and shell, and there were enough joy riders out to keep the water moving for us. Not to mention we also had countless bait activity around us, pogies and glass minners seemed to be the most prevalent. After watching Mr. Diablo string his 10th trout in 10 casts, i had to walk over there and potlick. It turns out the trick to him catching all those fish was the rhythm of his retrieve. He finally gave up this precious intel, and it turns out the trout only wanted the worm retrieved back to the beat of Kriss Kross' "Jump", not Hanson's "Mmmmm Bop" like they had wanted the day before. Sure enough after using this retrieve me and The Quick Release King were in the fish too.

I always like fishing in the Clear Lake area. Not only is the fishing great here this time of year, but so is the scenery as well. This really helps during the down times of the fishing trip, which are rare. I've always thought of Clear Lake as the best kept secret in the Galveston Bay complex.

There should be around 4-5 more fish in this picture...we'll just blame it on the dull hooks.

Good report. Congrats on the success! I'll have to remember the Kriss Kross retrieve. I guess the fish were paying him homage knowing what was gonna happen the next day.

When dealing with mouth breathers sometimes you have to be repetitive to get your point across. If anyone knows what i'm talking about it's you.

Be a good one for the ol' campfire wouldn't it? Might have to wait until after the 3rd or 4th whiskey.
