A good friend of mine who is also my girlfriend's brother planned a trip about two months ago to come down from Austin and go fishing. I wasn't sure what the weather would do two months in advance so I looked at the tides and thought it would be good enough to get things going. I figured that it would be a mid day bite based on previous patterns that had worked. We got out at about 6 around the ferry landing with not much going on. I'm against GULP and bait so we opted to fish with regular grubs and plastics to try to hit some flounder. I hit one undersized one and my friend struck out. I was hitting myself upside the head saying I should've compromised this one time to ensure my friend would have as much success as possible, being that he only gets to fish the coast once or twice a year. Well, we headed to West Bay around 10 and same results. I thought the later bite would be a little better but the particular spot wasn't promising. Not many signs of fish there. Not much bait and the little bait I saw wasn't really active or nervous. Moved around to another spot and I immediately saw some nervous mullet. I started with the new Norton paddle bait, but kept getting short strikes and with the high pressure, I assumed they wanted a slower retrieve, so what better bait to use other than the good ole faithful TTF Red Killer. I tied it on and immediately went to work. Four casts, four hookups, one spit the hook in my face, then on the 5th cast I hooked into a trout that was pushing 26 or 27". I worked it as gently as I could, but it spit the hook five feet from me. I wasn't gonna keep it anyway. Well, I limited out pretty fast and released about 15 more. No more big girls but it was fun. I also threw the TTF Trout Killer which also went to work on them. My friend only hit one trout. I helped him with the technique, but his hook set sucks and I can't teach a man how to set the hook. Fished over mixed sand and mud over shell in 3-4 ft of water. Tight lines!!!
