Had a lot going on today but found a small window to wet a line. I hopped into the same wade spot as yesterday at 2:00 PM and was out by 4:00 PM. The shad were there but not as nervous as yesterday. There were some reds cruising the shore but I tripped on a submerged rock and spooked them. I waited for a bit hoping they would come back but they were gone. Found the gut Cameron was casting to and worked it with a morning glory hackberry on a 1/8th oz jighead. I casted directly into the gut and worked it slowly, hopping the hackberry on the bottom. After 30 minutes of that, I had nothing to show for it. I then concentrated on the edges of the gut and bingo, that's where they were hiding.
Flounder one was a subtle tap and hold. I lifted the rod to feel the weight and the flounder munching on the Pro-Cure lathered bait. I remembered many of Cameron's lost flounder yesterday so I gave it my 10 count before giving the flounder a sharp hook set. I CPR'ed a 16 inch flounder. A few casts later I had just casted my hackberry when I felt a bone jarring strike. I set the hook and out came flying a potato chip flounder. It seemed as if they were getting more active. The shad soon balled up and I was pretty confident a hungry flounder was waiting for the opportunity to strike.
I started casting to the ball of shad and after 6 or 7 casts, my line went limp. I quickly gained the slack and felt a flounder munching on my hackberry. Again, I gave it my 10 count and set the hook.....ZZzzzzzzzzzzzz flounder took off and peeled drag. The flounder then shot straight up right through the middle of the ball of shad sending them spraying in all directions amid the angry flounder. It thrashed its head side to side like a trout, with it's mouth gaping. It was a good flounder and I had to bring it in. It gave a few short runs and I slowly walked backwards towards the shore. I could see the flounder now, its size magnified by the water. And a few more feet....I had her beached and flapping around like there was no tomorrow. The flounder went a tad over 4 pounds on the Boga and was roughly 20 inches. The hackberry was torn to shreds and had been inhaled. This flounder would only come off during the fight if I made any crucial mistakes. I CPR'ed the flounder, heavily considering taking it home to steam, but let it dart away. I caught a few more to reach my limit but they were all on the barely legal side. By 4:00 I was back in the car, going to do more errands and prepare for some evening activities.
