I bought a Tour Star rod at the boat show. The company is owned by the two gents that started All Star. I have the 6' 10" casting rod. I waded with it all winter and really like it. It is what I would call a mid priced rod ($159). I have thrown soft plastics, corkies and top waters with it. Good rod.

I use Allstar and never have had a problem. If they break they are cheap enough to go buy a new one. I have never used a custom rod and I am afraid to as I my change my whole aresnal.

its hard to beat a Castaway or All Star Classic from academy for $50 bucks. If it breaks, walk in and replace. No questions asked.
unfortunately academy no longer exchanges all stars if they break.

I have been using Ugly Stik's since the early 90's, after I had an Abu Garcia break into
3 pcs setting the hook on a large channel cat, back in Delaware. With the addition of a good
braid like Fins, I can get a positive hookset no problem. Granted they are a bit sensitive at the
tip, but and 7.5-8 ft medium action is hard to beat for overall durability and strength when you need it.

Just exchanged my all star yesterday but it wasn't broken so I'm thinking they won't mess with the ones that are. There is an art taking stuff back to academy but it's kind of like reading fish. Determine if the person at customer service is one of the following:

                    1) Hates their life and or job preferably both.
                    2) Young and will be intimidated very easily (95% of the academy staff).

If they are either put the biggest frown on your face throw your stuff onto the table and say "I AM returning this and I am NOT happy with this that is the reason I am returning it..." and they will usually just pretty much say f*** it I'm not messing with this guy today and just return if for you. You just have to stand your ground and say very little the more you talk the better chance they have of denying you same with police officers. Having a reciept helps but I have taken back those ray guard boots that are like $120 (dont buy them btw) that are like completely demolished with no receipt, no bag, no nothing. God bless academy...it's the new wal mart. Lmao.

I used to sell these cookies in my business class back in highschool and would pass a bunch out to my friends for free. I remember our teacher telling us that "the customer is always right" so if they got broken cookies and stuff we would have to replace them and give them more. When kids caught wind of this they abused the system and would eat half and bring the other half up and get free cookies. I always remembered this. Wasn't the most ethical thing but hey it's 2012.

I set my hook like I am fishing for tuna even if I am fishing for trout. Call me tuna Joe!

Id like to have a custom rod, but unforunately, the budget for this is going to be 50 bucks or less....I might even get two. You have all given me great suggestions and many are in my range. Ill wait for the rod riot and get one then!

get a production rod that feels good, and has a hook keeper. Save money for more gas.

if you try and return a broken rod at academy and they dont carry that model any more, they will not give you another one. it doesnt matter what brand.
the fishing was good,it was the catching that was bad.

H&H HXS p.843, these rods rock, you can get a 6.5 or 7 footer, split foam grip which I really didn't like, but now I don't like cork because of this rod. i've been using one for over 2 years now throwing 30lb power pro with no issues. Great wading rod.

I bought 3 with a buddy at the fishing show for $200; I don't know what his regular price is but I bet it's around $100, maybe a little less. Lifetime warranty and made in USA...guys lives in Richmond/Rosenburg area.
