All of this warm weather is so exciting! I've been seeing lots of jacks in the surf tearing up bait as well as in the bay! Can't wait till one finds my lure. Anyway, I waded the park sat night not expecting a whole lot, so i only brought my waders, pole and two spook jrs (bone and black). I got there at 630pm and worked some of the grassy islands. It didn't take long before a nice red smashed the black spook but after a minute came off. I threw to the same spot again and there was a big swirl under my bait but no taker. Then i walked a bit and heard a crash. I caught the tail end of the noise and saw right where it came from. It was this little horseshoe grass patch that in crotch of it had a couple reds ambushing bait. I tossed the spook right where they were and before i began my retrieve, a red slowly came up out of the water, looked at the bait and went back down. I don't know if he tried to eat it or not but it was cool to see. The next cast same thing, the red came up then back down. I couldn't coxe them into taking it though. Short trip, four or five blow-ups, none landed.
Sunday morning i came better prepared with an arsenal of lures and after a pretty healthy wade, manage one rat on a gold spoon. Late morning wade, very slow.
Sunday night came and i knew i could find a few keeper reds. I made it out to the same spots as the night before and after all was said and done, there were probrably ten blow-ups on tops with only two rats two show for it. I think a lot of the hits were rats and that was partially to blame for such few hook-ups. I brought gulp, gold spoons, spinner baits and tops. For me, the tops were out producing everything else.
I haven't had much luck finding reds in the bay until this weekend. Before I would find one here and there but i didn't know where to really target them. I still don't know where to target them but i think it may start clicking soon. These reds that i found this weekend were all right off the grassy points. If i ran my bait right next to the grass or even through it a little, that would provoke a strike. If i through off the grass just five or ten feet, not nearly as much action. Just a few feet seemed to make a big difference.
I don't know how to catch big trout in the winter and honestly, most of my winter trips didn't produce stellar boxes but that's all over now cause warm fishing is in effect! Hallelujah!

Good report, dont know if this'll help or not, but all my fish have been full of small minows and mullet, keeping that in mind you might try your smaller lures to match the hatch, you caught fish so your closing in on your formula. Thanks

Thanks for the detailed report. Sounds like you have them figured out, just a matter of time and it will all come together.

good report! top waters will scare off the reds sometimes, try a bass assasin or other plastic.
the fishing was good,it was the catching that was bad.

thanks galv 340. I didn't mention it but the am wade was low tide and the pm wades were high tide just as the tide was starting to leave. So now we have a clue as to where some reds are during high tides, its time to figure out where their hangouts during low tides are. I checked all the same spots during both tides and the fish were there for the high tide only it seemed.

I have got to learn to pay more attention to the tides. I'll check them before I go out but I'll have forgotten them by the time I'm in the water.

learned this from bass fishing. get a bass assasin or anything that looks like it. get a worm hook size 3/0 or 4/o. put it through like you do on a jig head with the hook out, but without the weight. throw it close to them, and watch the lure sink. start counting, this will determine how deep you want to go. hold your rod parralle to the water and twitch you rod with your wrists and reel one time. let your line go limp and twitch again reeling one time. repeat process. very effective for supended fish or finicky fish. hope this helps. Lord Bless.
