Lure selection

Iv come to realize that its a lil bit of a pain on the butt to change lures frequently while wading. My question is how much do you change lures or baits or do you have certain ones you pick for that day and thats all you mainly throw? Also is there a chart of some sort that shows you what colors to throw with different water conditions and whater color? thanks for everything guys I really appreciate yall answering all my questions instead of giving me some bull or saracsm.

For the most part, I have a set wade box that I take with me. While it is on the bulky side, it allows me to do long wades and adjust my presentation and lure based upon what the fish want and water conditions. However, I usually throw 3-4 baits a day max, so that saays something about me carrying the kitchen sink. At the same time, I use Norton quicktwists (or swirls?) which allows me to change between my baits quickly and efficiently.

Do you tie your lures on or do you attach them to a swivel of some kind? I use a quick clip type swivel that makes changing lures pretty easy. Fish can be fickle...some days numerous colors work and others it's just one that makes them bite. I have noticed in my adventures that top waters seem to be a lil less reliant on colors and more on action and the sound. I think there was a posting to a link on here called The Topwater Bible and in it they discussed color choices for different water clarities and whether or not the sun was out or it was overcast...it was very helpful and I think it could be applied to lures that are used below the surface.

When I am out using lures I try damn near everything if I have to...I try to give it some time and change my speeds and techniques. I am no pro or anything...these are just my observations. There are alot of guys on here that know their stuff and can add to what I have mentioned.

I used to carry several different lures in bunches of colors. Got tired of carrying all that stuff on a wade. I now throw Saltwater assassin Sea Shads (paddle tails) 90% of the time. I have a few colors I throw (chartreuse, morning glory charteuse, plum chartreuse, salt/pepper charteuse, and glow chartreuse. I keep a collection of red shad, limetreuse, white, and pumpkinseed chartreuse in the big box. I might add one or two of these based on conditions. As far as tops, I throw Super Spooks and Super Spook Jrs in bone or chrome/black head. I will throw an all black if it is really cloudy or i'm fishing in the dark.
It's a learning process and i'm still learning. It seems, as I get older, the less I want to carry! Just keep fishing, you will figure out what makes you comfortable!

For quick clips, try Tony Clips. They're the only ones I trust. I've lost way too many lures & fish to Nortons and others. I've never lost either on a Tony Clip.

For a general rule of thumb,,,Dark water/Dark bait. Clear water/ clear bait. Of course, we could talk for years on the variations and cloud cover. I saw an article that (for the upper coast) might be useful, this was about vibration being good 90% of the time, so maybe paddletails are more important than color, or a combination of both.
One thing is certain, Once you paid for the hottest lure, the lure company has made their money whether you catch a fish or not.

I use the Norton clips with swivel (smallest you can find) I think it looks like a booger hanging of the front of the lure, but it sure helps with changing often. It's a trade-off I know, but I believe in them.

"I don't always use clips...but when I do i use tony clips"...the dos equis man has spoken. I typically like to keep things as basic as possible the less things to go wrong the less things will go wrong. I haven't lost many fish to clips but the ones I did lose made me wanna cry lol.

Practice tying knots till it becomes second nature and or use Norton and Tony clips.

I never use any kind of clip as I want no disconnention between the fish and the rod tip. I do use a barrel swievel and shock leader mainly to keep my mono from bailing after a couple hundred cast if I have to really grind for fish. Like others I don't drag 3 or 4 lure boxes around either. I been catching fish for a long time on 4 main colored soft plastics. Red (strawberry,plum,morning glory) White (pearl,bone) Pink or orange and chartruese. I like the Hogie and Kelley soft plastics but you have to look hard for them sometimes. I catch a lot more fish with one bait because of toughness than the baits offered today. I will throw mirrolures and top waters at times but can usually get them eating with the soft baits. Natural baits when I take the grand kids out.

i like Moe's and Kenny's answer. i've bought a bunch of different colors. now i fish with: glow/chartreuse, watermellon or watermellon/red. roach, morning glory, glow/rootbeer. no clips as of yet, just tie straight to the jig head. hope this helps. Lord Bless.
