  • Fat mama trout!

Walked into my secret spot at GISP at 4 PM on a mission. Started with a soft plastic and nada for 20 minutes. Saw a couple mullet jump and switched to she dog and nada... Third time always being the charm, I clipped on the fatboy blackback, pearl chart belly and 2nd cast missed a big thump. Third cast got a bump on the drop, set the hook, nice trout about 15in that shook loose a 5ft away.

About 2 minutes later, got a GIANT bump, set the hook and off she went!! She fought so hard, I thought it was a nice red (the kind of fish that you cant winch in) and after a couple rounds of 5-8sec drag pullin, she surfaced. Big 26in high BMI trout. She was so wide and strong that it was hard to get a handle of her with the "trout grab" so I had to grab her by the tail.

Was the only person out there and would have loved it if 20 kayakers and 10 waders were around to see it. After some admiration, smiles and a pat on the back, she swam away effortlessly without any forced water.

After the release, a couple more decent trout and some rat reds fell victim to color number 12.

GISP is probably one of the most under-rated "public knowledge" spots in Galveston. You just need to know where to go!!

Plan on doing some wading when the water temp rises. Will be exploring this area and a few others. Any recommendations on where to go or look for in this area?
