Recommendations for new wader

I wear Patagonia Marlwalkers and they're sweet. I've never worn rayguards, but they seem prudent. On the other hand, I've spent the previous 53 years wandering around in the water and never needed them.
I love my cheap Hodgeman breathable waders, but I really wish I'd put that money towards some better ones. Also, since I wade alone alot, I really like having a wading staff with me.

No need for guards, just another expense in an expensive world. Just shuffle your feet. Do not buy the Magellan boots, those will last you about 3 months if you wade a lot. waste of $30.

I wear ray gaurds. I would hate the day i DIDNT wear them and got hit. Not worth the risk. I dont get in without them. Also when im wading in the winter i have the wraps over my wade boots.

As stated earlier, Patagonia Marlwalkers are the best, hands down... I have had a pair for 14 years and the first five I was wading three days a week. They are as solid today as the day I bought them. Also, consider using compression socks used by cyclists for your summer wading. They improve circulation, which is huge on long days on the flats. They breath well and are thick enough so any mud or small shell that gets in the boot go unnoticed. I do not recommend getting one pair of boots for summer and winter. If you walk miles like I do, the over sized boots (even with neoprene socks to take up space) will be uncomfortable and will wear your feet out, not to mention your lower back.

Greetings flounder slayer. the SS spook jr with the saltwater hooks is what i use. the freshwater hooks will rust. when you get home, just rinse them with water. i do the same with jig heads. i use ZOOM super fluke watermelon or watermelon/red. these are freshwater baits that look like saltwater assasins. CAL brand paddle tail chartruese glow, CAL brand chartruese split tail, Cal rootbeer in both paddle tail and straight tail. mirrow lure red/yellow paddle tail, TTK morning glory, chartruese glow, rootbeer. TTK hackberry hustler. these catch reds, trout, flounder, crokers, spanish macks, ribbon fish, blue fish. SS spook jr in bone, black with saltwater hooks. hope this helps. i wear the ray guard boots. they are $125 at academy, but better than a hospital visit. all it takes is one hit from a stingray. during the summer i wear breathables or vinyl jogging pants. during the winter, thermals, neoprene, sweater, windbreaker.
