Spend the money. I'm going to finally put down the cash and get a good simms jacket from FTU. I have gone through a couple of Magellans. Everyone I've had fills up with water if you wear it on the outside of your waders. My dad's did the same thing and Steve_A on this board had the same problem as well. If you wade a lot in the winter get a GOOD one!!

i was able to fix the problem with magellan jackets filing up with water by cutting small holes in the inside liner of the jacket. i liked the price until i ran into that problem. hope that helps the poor people like myself.
I have an uncontrolable desire to wanna jerk my rod.

That is up to you. Go check them out. See which one you like and or fits your budget and get it. Simms make great products. When it comes to which one to get, you need to make your own decisions you will be the one wearing it not someone else.

What are the best winter waders? Neoprene required?

you wont get cold with the neoprene but a pain to get on and off.
the fishing was good,it was the catching that was bad.

I never liked neoprene. I use breathables and layer up. some good thermals as a base is a must.

Breathables for sure. Neoprene waders are a work out. You cant stuff your jacket inside of them either.

This Simms guide jacket is what I wear. http://www.simmsfishing.com/site/gui...G:98.199.53.42
I wore out an old Freestone jacket, sent it in and Simms offered me the guide jacket for $200.

I bought the original Freestone on ebay for $100. and wore it for years. The zipper pull eventually came off so I sent it back to Simms. They gave me the second Freestone free ( the one in my first post) I wore it for maybe five years and the lining got thin at the shoulders and upper back. I sent it in to simms and they said it was caused by mildew and made me the offer on my current guide jacket. Follow the care recommendations on the website for longer jacket life. I always just threw mine in and cooler after it dried.....
The Freestone kept water out at the cuffs OK, best I recall. Never had wet arms to the elbows or anything. The Boga is your friend in the winter.

i wear neoprenes, army (green) thermals, workpants or bluejeans, sweatshirt, windbreaker with hood, fleece pull over for head, hat to keep hood from falling on eyes. neoprene gloves with finger tips that velcro to the glove. these work great. pull fingers out for casting, then pull finger tips over fingers and start reeling. the water won't bother it one bit. if it's below 45 degrees and a little windy, i stay home. no sense in catching a cold. fish will be waiting for me when the weather climbs above 45. great time to catch on some great deals for waders is during the spring sale at FTU. i got some simms for $20. i got the fleece for $8. Lord Bless.
