Decided to go fish today despite the 30+ mph winds. I have found that on days before a storm comes, if you find the trout, they are aggressive. Went to my usual spot and the water was completely sandy. The winds were gusting and right away, I knew this was going to be no good. I hung around the area for a good hour before I decided to head out. The whole time I had one thump on the plumtreuse assassin. I stopped at Jack-in-the-Box for some breakfast and parked on the seawall to admire the large swells. After I finished, on a whim, I decided to head over to TAMUG to check and see if they were finished with construction of my winter hole. On the bridge, I noticed that there was a lot of bait in the water and the wind was in a more favorable direction. I parked and headed in. The water was no different- a sandy sandy color. I figured that this was going to be a bust, however, there was a lot of small bait jumping around. I tied on a bone spook and went to work. First half an hour, I had no blow-ups and I tried bone, chartreuse-clear, and black-chrome. Nothing. I then went to hackberry hustler in morning glory and had some interest. By this time the winds picked up even more and I was heading on in. I then noticed a patch of cleaner water. I launched my hustler over there and a few twitches later, I had a small 15 inch trout. I released the fella to grow bigger. For a while, I had small hits here and there but nothing major. I then casted toward the submerged pipe and hooked onto a nice ladyfish. The ladyfish threw the hook and tangled it on my line. After untangling it, I throw it out and I twitch once and hear the *pop* of a trout feeding. I feel the hit and BOOM. I bring it in, it turns out to be a 24 inch trout. The trout completely inhaled the hackberry. My new PB! I called it a day after that.
Lessons learned:
Even in really sandy waters, you can find trout- as long as there is bait. Trout are aggressive before a storm! (so far) Hope these winds die, we get some rain, and I go fish again before I officially start work.
