  • Struck out at the Pass

Not sure that it was worth a half day’s pay, but I decided to run down to SLP (36 miles) and give it a try this afternoon. The high tide was supposed to have been around Noon today, so I was hoping to find a nice outgoing current by about 2:30 since I have always done my best there in May on an afternoon outgoing tide. Not the case today. Even though the winds were very gentle from the Southeast, when I left around 5:30, the current was still moving in. I was fishing in an area that I (am some other friends) have historically done very well (in late April and May); that being on the Follett Island side of the pass between the bridge and the old SLP fishing pier. I threw a ¾ gold spoon for 3 hours (lure that has always been productive for me there) and never had a hit. The water was very comfortable, a little better than “trout green” and not really that rough. Due to my work locations the past few years, this is only the second time I have tried this “old reliable spot” since Hurricane Ike. Judging the breakers and a few other factors, it appears to me that Ike may have changed the bottom terrain there enough that the fishing may not have the same potential as it had pre-Ike. I make this “ZERO REPORT” in hopes that someone familiar with this area may provide some insight that I may be missing.

Uhm, it's not a good idea to be wading in the pass.....

I wade on the bayside of the pass. Just gotta be careful. Current is crazy at times.

this is the right time of year for trout at the pass but I haven't caught any either. the cooler weather is making for a late run I guess.
the fishing was good,it was the catching that was bad.

I am a complete newb and beginners luck got me two trout. One was 16 and the other was a little larger by the looks, but she shook the hook just as I was reaching to grab her. I was using live shrimp on what is called a popping bobber (?).

CP3-Were you on the Brazoria County side, if so we almost met, as I had my truck ready to leave Angleton at 5 after work yesterday but was just too tired to run down there. The conditions should have been set up pretty good there for a late afternoon wade. Just as an FYI to others, the specks are definitely in the surf now, as I strung a limit (in another location, not the pass), between 6:15 and 7:30 on Tuesday morning. All on a 3/4 oz. gold spoon.

Yeah ghosts of all the big trout I've slayed there through the years. Just always wear a PFD! . If the current gets you just float with it and you will eventually be back on dry lands

Sure NK. I'm based out of Angleton now. As a matter of fact, if I can get my work duties wrapped up by 5:30, I'm gonna run down to a spot in Drum Bay and see if I can rustle up a little redfish on the halfshell for supper tonight.
