  • First time at SLP

Hey guys I've been wanting to do some surf fishing for a while now. So I plan on going to SLP possibly this Saturday bright an early. I plan on probably walking in about 20 yards (I dont want to go too deep, I hear its pretty dangerous out there) and casting from there, using live shrimp on top and bottem. Dont know what to really expect. It will be my first time, and I was hoping if any of yall had some tips/tricks. I am also hoping there isnt much wind. What weather conditions should I look for? Also, will there be a lot of people there since it will be the weekend? Thanks guys

Dont wade in the pass no matter what conditions you have. If its rough off the surf it aint worth it to wade out there, your best bet will be going to the bay side behind bridge.
    Karma's a beach.

DEFINITELY Don't wade by the bridge when the tide starts moving it will suck you right out with it!! Its gets REALLY BAD there on a Strong Tide day!!

Why is the surf so dangerous out there? How does it compare to any other beach? From what I've seen on videos and pictures SLP seems pretty calm with little waves.

Very bad rip currents and undertoes there as well as the mouth of Brazos. Be extremely careful I never wade the surf at the pass

So you just fish from the bank by the bridge or the beach itself?

I like the surf side, agreed don't play with the current. The eddy at the mouth seems to produce all kinds of stuff. Not sure what you're goin for but you will bring in jacks, shark, bullred, and more. Remember make you cast and back out, not a place to play.

Where channel meets the surf you'll see a swirl in the area. Baitfish stay in the area. Cast around the edge, whole mullet, shrimp, crab, cuttbait. Be sure to rig large, lots of monsters there.

Cool I'll look it up on google maps. Yeah I have a 8' spinning surf rod. Should I expect a lot of people there?

Anywhere to camp near by? I hear the beach is off limits for camping.

May your rod never go limp
