  • 11-8-2014 deep bayou , la.

With my louisiana license in hand , i put the kayak in at the junction of johnson and deep bayou , louisiana . I've never been there before , but i saw it on google earth . Light north /northeast winds mainly , partly cloudy . My intent was to land 10 big louisiana flounder . Instead i got one small throwback . Full moon tide graphes showed a good outgoing tide in the morning and incoming in the afternoon . But , there , the tide seemed to be a slow outgoing all day . Not much movement surprisingly and murky ....4 inches visibility . Maybe because i was so far back in the marsh .

I had to go under this bridge to enter deep bayou . I fished both banks shallow and out to the middle with a gulp on the bottom for 100 yards . Not even a trash fish nibble .

On and on i went , getting excited as i spooked a big flounder when approaching a mud flat . At a bend is where i caught my potato chip flounder . Lots of crab traps . The bayou seemed lifeless without better water movement . I saw some flounder coming out of the water feeding at a junction that had better water movement but could not get a strike even though i cast covered the area . On the back and sides of an island ox bow the water was less than two feet deep , murky and the redfish were making big mud boils . I ended up with 4 reds . Two 27 inchers , the better of the two 8.5 pounds , a 21 inch , and 22 inch . It was fine feeling them take the gulp , pausing , setting the hook , and hearing the drag screech out . I got towed around some too . END

I RETURNED TO THE TRUCK ABOUT 5 PM . THIS LITTLE BOAT WAS OUT WHEN I LAUNCHED IN THE MORNIING . BAIT FISHING I GUESS . A VAN PULLED UP AND BACKED A SINGLE AXLE LITTLE TRAILER INTO THE WATER AND , DANG , IF THEY DIDN'T GET THAT BOAT LOADED AND OFF DOWN THE ROAD . THOSE REDS WERE FEASTING ON SMALL SHRIMP . Nice report Henry. Lots of great pictures and those reds look yummy.
Can't believe that area wasn't loaded with flounder.

I saw flounder but couldn't get any . Water was murky . When I saw some busting out of the water feeding and got no results crawling a gulp along the bottom , I put on a chrome super spook junior and slowly walked it along . Neither flounder nor reds wanted any part of it. I suspect they were keyed in on small shrimp .

I must say that in that area initially I saw some sprays of silver shad leaping out of the water . Thus the silver SS JR. to mimic the shad . I am surprised I couldn't get a flounder. Maybe a better angler would have ! HAR!
