  • Just Flounder- 10/03/13 Report

Didn't have morning classes so I loaded up the yak to fish my redfish spot. I was on the water at 6ish and greeted with some very stained water. Peddling to my spot I saw some bait being blown up on a shoreline. I immediately thought trout and hauled myself over there. First cast with the rattlin spook, I get a massive blow up. By mid fight though I knew I had a gafftop. Second cast produced another gafftop. Not what I'm looking for, so I move on. Finally reach my spot, which is a shell flat with a series of guts throughout. The tide is a bit high but there is bait everywhere. I move around the flat and look around for the reds...who apparently got the memo that I was coming. The whole time I saw two reds, both sitting on a shell bar next to a gut. I hooked one and got rewarded with a spit hook, and spooked the other. By 7 I was pretty discouraged as the reds were not cooperating. I was using a spinner bait and gulp combo when I suddenly started catching flounder...after flounder. I would feel the vibrations of the spinner bait and then a *thud* and the bait would just stop. Gave them a few moments to eat and then gave a good hook set. All the flounder were caught on the edge of the flat or gut. Once I located an edge, I would just work up and down it until I found another one. Ended the day with 8 flounder (all released), including a nice 22 incher!Click image for larger version

I'll take a pic tomorrow but its a H&H spinner (or strike king redfish magic) with a jighead with a gulp ripple mullet.
