  • 8/30: Surfside Marsh

I walked in the surf at Surfside Beach Access 1 about 6:00a this morning. It was flat beyond the 2nd bar all morning. Water was trout green. I could easily see my feet standing in waist deep water. I caught two trout - one on a pink skitterwalk and another on a plumtreuse assassin. I caught my fair share of lady fish and blues. As the morning dawned, a number of live bait guys came in and it looked like there were doing pretty well. I walked out about 9a.

I took my kayak to the boat launch at the end of 257J and went east to the old ICW. I caught one red up against a cut bank and an undersized flounder in one of the drains. I caught another couple of specs at the intersection of the old and now ICW. It was the place with any current at all. When I launched it was eerily still.

I paddled up redfish creek and saw another kayak back there so I bailed and went west to Swan Lake. I found a pretty good pod of redfish in the grass and stalked them standing and push poling my kayak. That was fun. I'm not very stealthy. I found a pod of 200 fish and caught 1 on a white/brown Bugg. I chased the other 199 around for an hour or two until my darling bride called.

Didn't smoke 'em but I had enough action to make my day. Hope everybody has a good Labor Day. I'm staying off the water until the crowds subside.

First red of the day. I think that red spot is where his CCA tag came out.

2nd red went about 24". Nice fight in about 10" of water.
