At a minimum, there is a dirt ramp almost every 5 miles on the westend. So it is really a non-issue for me. 7 miles one way sounds like a lot until you ride in a hobie with turbofins. Peddling becomes second nature like walking.Originally posted by Galveston340.....gotcha! I have always thought about "yak" fishing as something I would do "in close" so to speak. Seven miles in a yak.....not for me, unless I was exploring some new grounds that I might later want to get the flattie in to.
By the way, when I used to use the kevlar perou I would launch wherever....never at a "boat launch". Side of the road most of the time was the way to go.
Also, it is very easy to troll a topwater behind you, meanwhile you are chunking soft plastics.
For someone looking for a lot of exercise, paddling is the way to go.

its not that your are fishing water that is 3" deep ...well some times on a shoreline... but its that you have travel through it to get to the deeper water that might not not be more than a 1' - 2' deep.Originally posted by micklitz View PostSo what percentage of keeper fish you catch in a year are caught in water that barely covers your foot?

Seems to me that the less you carry the less draft...right?
i am a pretty minimul guy when it comes to what i carry ... pretty much what you listed. it only takes me a few minutes to launch once i pull up. i know some guys spend 30 minutes rigging everything up for their day on the water.

Sneak off and go to the Houston Boat Show at the Reliant Stadium. It runs through Sunday and is open today at 1pm. There will be yaks there as well as a lot of other tempting boats.

Yep. If you happen to go on the last day and they have yaks left...they may cut you a good deal! :POriginally posted by goodeyak View PostSneak off and go to the Houston Boat Show at the Reliant Stadium. I went to the boat show today (its an old habit
and the Austin Canoe/Kayak people had a few yaks there. However, you can save the $10 parking & $8 entry fee and go to their place in Bellaire (Houston). They are very knowledge and helpful when it comes to yaks. Also, they rent them. Try it before you buy.

Try as many different options as you can. I 100% agree that you must have the right tool for the job. Some people just don't know what certain tools are capable of though. I am a firm believer in seeing for yourself. As far as I am concerned advice only means so much. The best way to learn is to put them to the test to see what YOU prefer. There are alot of brands and alot of options. Alot of people only think of the Pro Angler with Hobie but the Revolution11 and 13 are my personal favorite. Then again some people just want to paddle, to each his own. You just need to find what suits you best.Team Rolling Thunder

I own the Hobie Sport and the Ocean Kayak Prowler (15.5') and I like them both, but I too like other yaks (Cobra for one) but I do not care for the Academy yaks. While the Academy yaks are cheaper they are not built as well for fishing. Now, for anyone thinking about buying a yak be warned about flying lures!! You are sitting at water level and whenever you jerk your line to set the hook, or in an attempt to get it free from some object, it comes flying right back at your face. Many a person has had the painful and unfortunate experence to have that double treble hook attached to their face.
