My buddy and I hit the surf with the intent to get some sheeps and spanners. He had been fishing it hard for 3 trips, but the clarity has been bad, even with how calm it is. I had only caught one barely keeper mack on Monday, but he flipped out of the yak before he got strung. We were both ready for a slump-buster.
Same as everyone else is reporting, tons of bait and slicks. The water finally cleared up for us on Tues! Ribbon fish and hardtails hitting the plankton hard, birds working them. There are big white shrimp in the surf, and the jacks were going nuts over them. Big splashes, some even going airborne (never seen jacks come out of the water completely). Shrimpers trawling too.
The sheep action was fair. We drifted live shrimp under corks and I caught 3 keepers and a bunch of throwbacks. My buddy got one keeper and a spanner. I had a strong running hit that felt like an upper-slot red and broke off my braid above the leader (must have been weakened
)
We saw some mack-looking blow-ups further out and went to chase them. I started trolling out there and got hit quick. Unfortunately it was a crevalle and I was not about to give him my only rigged spoon so I used up about 45 minutes of fishing time, but I got an arm workout at least.
Good times, I can't bring myself to fish the bay when the surf is down. Too much fun, and a lot of cool stuff out there.
