  • Surf Gigging

Man I sure wanted to head down there to gig the surf the conditions are perfect. I use to gig the surf with my grandfather in the early 70s. Lantern and a #2 washtub on a rope. Never forget it. Nights when I wished I lived on the island not Cypress. Give me a message if anybody is interested sometime.

I never heard of surf gigging . I could see how a north wind could flatten the surf and make it possible in rare occasions . Did you gig in the first gut close to the beach or a protected pocket next to a groin ?

First gut and on the first bar if I remember right. Ive always wanted to give it a try again. It was always cold during the run. They are out there right now and its flat and green to the beach. Missed a rare opportunity.

Sounds great. I've never gigged anywhere before. Seems like the beach would be just as good as the bay.

its still flat on the sea wall, sounds like a good idea next to the rocks. I saw some guys catching one after another last year, didn't even think about gigging them!
the fishing was good,it was the catching that was bad.

                I've gigged the beach before.
Even though we all do the shuffle, think about how many times you've stepped on something that fluttered out from under you're foot, almost always on top of a sandbar. 9 times outta 10 betcha it was a Nice Flounder.
When I surf fish at night I always bring a gig and when the fish aren't bitting and if the conditions are decent enough you can get lucky.

Not that much different than a Karankawa indian hunting the shallows at night with a torch and a spear.

I have a old high school buddy that's a registered nurse and has talked to at least 2 Galveston old-timers that used to gig the surf right next to the rock groins. The water has to be low and flat.

Me and my son-in-law tried it twice and didn't see any flatties. I know they have to be out there.

My luck I'd gig a stingray.

So i let a buddy who had the night off know that conditions were perfect and he actually went and tried this.

Got 3 to 22", dont know how long he was out but couldnt have been more than a few hrs by the sound of things.

He said that they were really covered up by the sand and light wave action. I have seen this in the bay on rougher shorelines too. Said he even stepped on one. Nice sand bottom to wade and tons of plankton in the surf now. Also didnt have to compete with any fan boats, imagine that...

What I don't know about flounder gigging would fill several volumes. What are 'good' conditions for surf gigging? North wind, Flat calm and clear water?
