  • Gigging Trip 2-1-13

The son-in-law and I decided to go gigging last Friday nite. The winds were under 10 mph. That was good. We usually go on a low tide, but this nite we were in a high tide. Water was still relatively low and super clear. Little to no moon. Lots of bait in the water. Didn't see a single stingray or crabs. We did see a racoon fishing in the shallows near the shore. We gigged on the West End in a new spot (to us).

We saw 7 but passed on 3 of them. The 4 we gigged were 15"-16" and in about 5" of water.

    Here are a few pics.................

my stinky pants stringer works really well. The flounders slide right off.

my son-in-law with a big smile. This was his 3rd gigging trip. He has it down now. He and my oldest daughter made me and wifey first time grandparents in Nov. Baby boy. He's going to learn early how to fish and gig!!!!

that's me with my Boston t-shirt and fillet knife. LOL Those are our 2 diy underwater gigging lights in the background. They are powered by RC lipo cells that weigh slightly over 1 lb. We tested them and they run for 13 hours straight......more than enough time. My son-in-law likes to put his finger in the pic. LOL

I had 2 custom calcutta bamboo gigs made in Dec. They are 5 1/2 foot long. It has a 2 point non-barbed stainless steel head. I had them wrapped in tarred rope where we hold the gigs and at the ends. They are super light. The guy is out of California and makes high quality calcutta bamboo gaffs.

    Here are a few pics:

plenty of wrapped rope to get a good grip even when its wet

I thought about getting the double head barbed or allthreaded, but decided against it. I am old school. I like to stick my hand underneath the gigged flounder, feel for the points, lift the flatty out of the water and onto the stringer. When my son-in-law gigged one of his flounder, I saw it before it kicked up the sand. As my son-in-law was bending over to slip his hand underneath the fish I asked him, "are you sure that's a flounder and not a stingray?" He lifted back up pretty quickly and looked at me. I laughed and told him I was just fudging with him. LOL The look on his face was priceless.
