  • buying a boat

I'm trying to help my father buy a used boat. One of his biggest concerns is how many hours are on the engine. I don't know much about boats, and he doesn't know much about the internet. This is kind of a joint effort. Anyways...I found a boat that falls in line with his criteria. When I asked the seller how many hours were on the engine, he said he wasn't sure but that he was the second owner and his uncle was the first. Not sure if this is normal (to not know hours) or if the hours on an engine really are/aren't a big deal. Could one of you help me out? The engine is a 2002 VMAX. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hours of use? Heck, I've never known how many hours were on any engine I've ever owned. But I can tell you that low hours is not always a good thing. Boats that never get run have a lot more problems than ones used every weekend.

I know almost nothing about boats, let alone motors, but one thing I would ask in lieu of engine hours is the last time he had the engine serviced in any fashion. Then go into detail about it. If the engine hasn't been serviced, I would be wary of it.

I would recommend bringing it to a qualified shop for an inspection, could be well worth the expense, they service them all the time & can give you a better insight on the motor.
                  Today is a new day!!

VMAX 200 are great motors. Need to check compressions, water pressure, Sensors, Oil Pump and Transfer Pump on remote tank. VMAX and OX66 Motors are the best motors ever produced from Yamaha, as well as 115, and 130's. Bouy37 has a real nice Blue Wave, we regularly service his boat and it is in awesome shape. I would def. buy it if I was in the market, plus the maintanace has been performed regularly and documented.

I'm not sure on boat motors but hour meters don't mean much on construction equipment (my line of work) if it is junk in the 1st place. Service records are more important than hour meters. For me, no service records, no sale. Hour meters can be changed to reflect anything the seller wants.

Most motors wear out due to neglete and just sitting ....

Take a look at the skeg .... if it's worn down on a shallow boat that can tell you alot .... and if it has all it's paint I would ask questions as to why .....

It should start right up.... and you want it to be a cold start ...

Look for corrision up under the front where the stearing arm is ...

Compression check is a must ....and look for cracks around the transom
