  • Motor warning horns "bleeps"

Just took my boat out for the first time in about 2.5 months. It's got a 2001 mercury 150 hp carbureted motor. When cruising the warning horn barely "bleeps" every so often. The water coming out of the discharge is cool, and the motor sounds fine. What could this be? Could it have something to do with a low battery? Because when I got here the key was left on and I had to charge it for a few hours for it to start.

No it hasn't. It's the original. You think it's just a bad horn?

          Might be a bad T-Stat.

Ok I'll start with the alarm.

And if it was a bad t-stat wouldn't it be over heating? The water is cool and the horn doesn't constantly go off it just chirps every few seconds. Or am I wrong?

I should have read the post better. it's Not the alarm buzzer cause it get's signal for it to sound, sounds like you have a temp sensor going bad on one of the heads.

Well looks like I may have just found the problem. The wire going to what I think is the sensor in the block is missing a tiny piece of insulation and is making contact with the block right on that part of the wire. Should I replace the whole sensor and the wire or just seal up that part of bare wire?

I would Cut it where the insulation is nicked. Then get some weather proof heat shrinkable connectors from the auto parts store (RED) strip and put the butt connector in place, use a lighter to seal the shrink tubing on each end, then you should be good. That makes sense because a ground touching one of the 2 browns will close the circuit triggering the alarm.

Awesome! Thanks for the quick replies and help. I'm going to pick up some butt connectors tonight and run it tomorrow. I'll let you know if this did the trick. Once again thanks!

No problem, wish the best of luck. Worse case let me know I have a few used Sensors laying around you can have if it doesn't cure the problem

Check your oil also. My Merc beeps on and off when the oil starts getting low.

Well crap that wire splice did not fix the bleeps. I guess I'll replace the temp sensors now.

It's not low oil either my reservoir is almost full.

Well I think I know this issue with the motor.. It has something to do with poor oil circulation. Upon inspection of the smaller reservoir on the motor, it seems as if the oil level is really low. There is oil in the lines, but there isn't a whole lot in that reservoir, which I think is setting off the float sensor in the reservoir. So what do y'all think it is? Oil pump, air in the lines...??? Here is a pic of the oil level.
