When was the last time you did a carb job?

That would be my 1st guess .... the jets can get clogged real easy

Check your plugs but if running good at low speed, likely aint plugs. Sounds like hi-speed jets and ya need to drain bowl and likely rebuild carb IMO (which is pretty worthless-just ask anyone!!). Good luck.

Carbs, or coil issue. Start with carbs.

I had a problem similar to this and it was the dad gum connection at the tank that was sucking air. But I'd side with a high speed jet being clogged or a coil issue as Bryan said. He has been tinkering with outboards for a while.

More than likely in the high speed jet, those Johnson's had pretty good coils and didn't fail very often. You need to sync and link the carbs after the rebuild or it will run like S__T!

Basically, you go to the starboard side of the carbs, the butterfly's that have the rod connecting the multiple carbs in line to open at the same time you will see either a flat head or Phillips screw going into the side of each butterfly. You want to back the screw out a 1/4 or so turn to free the tension on all the butterfly's (LEAVE ALL LOOSE) this will let all the butterfly's close on the port intake body from the return spring tension on the butterfly's which is synchronizing them, when you tighten the screw on the butterfly's with them all closed this is linking them together. Relay simple, but will make a huge difference in performance.

Buddy had a 40 HP Johnson and he kept it in his Father's dirt floor pole barn. About every second trip he had to clean out the high speed jets on it to keep it running right. I have a 23 year old Johnson 90 HP and have had the same thing happen to it many times if it sets up to long. I also second the idea of evansmarine. You have got to sync and link the carbs or the motor will not be right at all. Symptoms make you think the thing is about to fall off the boat but the fix is pretty easy.
