Hit the bay today about 7:30 by 9:30 i had a limit drifting a spoil bank. Most Fish were small keepers with a couple pushing 18-20", and a fair number of dinks. The highlight was a black drum, thought i had a new PB trout the way it pulled, it was fun though. Between 9:30 and 11 i tried a couple of other areas with no luck. Just as i was about to call it a day i noticed the wind starting to lay down. So i went back to my first spot and noticed a lot of bait off the spoil bank and on the flat adjacent to it. I spent the next 2.5 hours following the bait and casting at swirls, picking up another dozen fish. All but 2 of these fish went between 17-20".
I didn't notice a couple of things.
When i first fished the area, i worked the twitch bait and a fat boy very traditionally, twitch-pause. Most strikes came on the pause. And i had a lot of missed strikes.
Now when i came back to the area almost all of the fish came on a steady retrieve with the twitch bait. And they were better fish and had only a few missed strikes. I figured this out with a little bit of dumb luck. While working the bait in one direction a big swirl gets my attention in another. Not wanting to take my eye off the swirl i just start reeling the bait as fast as i could, when a solid trout hammers it. Well thats all it took for me. It was a steady retrieve after that.
All in all it was a great day on the water. And remember sometime it pays off to listen to the fish.
