  • Rain Won't Stop Us- 11/8/11 Report

You must be thinking there is no way anyone was going to fish the afternoon. Well Uber and I aren't just anyone. Don't worry, safety was paramount! We headed out of 2004 ramp at around 4:00. Got to a shell flat very close to the ramp and were casting out in our drift. I hook up on a nice trout around 20 while Uber hooks up one a bit bigger. Then the rain hits and we look at each other and laugh. The fishing continues. The trout were very active with them popping bait around us. I tried something very new. Recently, Uber has been catching more trout on the She-dogs instead of the spook. It is my understanding that the she-dogs (or any of the Mirrolure brand topwaters) makes a higher pitched noise. So...I got a popper and chugged away. First cast...chug...chug....pop...chug....BLWOOOSH! 17 inch trout hits it. After this, we actually sight casted for trout. They hit the surface chasing bait, we cast in the general area and POW! We had a few double hook-ups. All this time...the rain was falling at a steady pace, but it wasn't too bad. Eventually, the heavier stuff was coming and we high tailed it in. A few hours earlier, we would have been on some nice fish. All the fish were released to grow bigger! I'll let Uber post the pics!

Nice job guys! She-dogs work fine, just like the SS. Skitterwalks are good too. I usually have several of each in my box.
I just picked up some TTF gun dogs so I can try them out next time!

Yep we got drenched but it was pre-front wasn't gonna stop us. Lately the bigger spooks have just not been as effective as the she-dog's and skitterwalks for whatever reason. Sometimes trout can get picky for no real reason so we've been throwing some smaller stuff.

The hi-pitch she dog in black/chartreuse has pretty much become my top producer when the wind is gusting and they want something loud and dark. My original go-to was the black full size spook but as stated lately it's just been drawing less action as a smaller bait because most of the mullet that are flipping aren't as big and/or the trout are just acting picky. The hi-pitch addition to the old she-dog (says hi pitch on the package) makes this lure incredibly loud, I think it's the loudest one I have in my box. I haven't seen anyone post this anywhere but in my honest opinion I think it's the sound of a top water that generates the reaction strike and not so much the color or the profile. I think the sound is what draws them to it and the action is what makes them actually hit it. I think more important than the actual color is it just being visible in the water which is why black on black (dark clouds dark bait) works good. I do really like that the chartreuse head makes it stand out with good contrast too. My tackle box doesn't have many lures in it because I've learned to downsize how many I throw and become confident in a few only but this will definitely be an addition.

The highlight was J throwing the chugger. That was pretty funny. We talked about it last time and he's the only one crazy enough to try it out but sometimes I definitely think that when you stop listening to what other people are telling you and start figuring some things out yourself you can make some really cool breakthrough's and today was one of them. All fish were caught on the same medium to medium-fast retrieve with variable pauses.

We caught and released a lot of trout in that hour and it was pretty easy limits if J got off work earlier, but when we were in our spot one of us would be getting a blow-up every 3 or so casts that's for sure (forgot the trolling motor at home). Most of our trips now will be catch and release since our freezers are full and my family is just about sick of fish. Most trout were over 20" but we caught two that were 15 and 17" respectively. Trout are really getting fatter too.

I will also add that my hooks will be getting changed out again on the she-dog. I haven't used them in a long time so out of all of my topwater's it was the only one that I hadn't changed the hooks out of and I lost about 3 trout to that problem - very frustrating. I can safely say after replacing the stock hooks on all my baits with the VMC's fish do NOT usually pull lose and it's a night a day difference.

No problem! The fish ratio between Uber and I while I was using a silver/black spook and his blacktruese she dog was probably around 1:3. When I switched to the popper to get more noise, the ratio evened out. It's all about noise an the trout finding the bait.

remove the back hook off you chug and tie on about twenty inches of leader and add your corky. cast and retrieve as necessary to obtain your wanted catch for the day.
