Chocolate bay report in the yak 9-26-11
So I was feeling really lazy and didn't report back about our kayaking expedition on the bayou.
Water Clarity: Good till afternoon then got muddied up w inc. winds
Wind: 6 am - 5mph to none. 1 pm - 20 mph.
Mosquitos: Everywhere. Every. Where.
Report: So we got out and launched @ 2004. As soon as we stepped out of the car we were greeted with swarms of mosquitos biting every part of our body that wasn't covered. Welcome to Chocolate Bayou! Enjoy your first stay!
Anyways, we got maybe half a mile out and they were still so bad that we had to turn around and get bug spray. Someone shoulda warned us! *cough corndog buoy cough cough* Lol.
So we get back onto the water around 7:30 am and work our first spot thanks to buoy. Throwing the old bone ss. jr. with blow-ups on every cast. Frustrating Jhua moment. Remembering his post I swapped off fairly quickly to a soft plastic and started chunking around the marker. Landed small dink trout after small dink trout. Everything was small!
Decided to look for reds - kayaked maybe 3 miles downstream to the bubble spot and the awesome shoreline before it which I'll leave unnamed. Saw reds busting bait and was casting about 5 feet in front of them could see their tails up going after my Rage tail shrimp - hooked up 3 times but landing fish out of a kayak is a lot tougher than I was used to so lost 2, landed one but unfortunately he was around 18".
Fished that shoreline opposite side and caught a zillion small specks on dark soft plastics and 1 keeper. My friend ended up catching a nice 20" flounder in the same spot.
The wind had picked up around noon to almost 20 mph and very gusty and frustrating at times. The kayak back was epic paddling against the wind for almost 4 miles. Needless to say - that's why you didn't see me report. My back is killing me and I'll definitely be checking the winds in this thing because for a while we didn't think we'd be making it back! Lol.
Fishing is definitely on @ chocolate but something was going on with all the small trout. We need to learn where the big ones hang - it was our first trip so all in all very good. And you also have to know what you're doing with the spots you pick. A few of these spots are holding a lot of schoolies but where there are small trout, on the outer edges we are thinking there must be some bigger ones. Still learning the area and didn't have time to stay for the next bite (buddy had work @ 3).
We ended up with 6 trout, 1 flounder and smaller red. Fished from 7:30 - 1 pm.
