  • Playing with the Big Gals

Made a trip to West Bay on Thursday (Dec 9th) and man those conditions were PERFECT until about 9:30am when the wind shifted to SW and blowing !

My fellow kayaker has always had pretty good luck with his cork (corky wanna be) lure, so I forced myself to fish it today. The usual drift wasn't working, so I made an adjustment to cover a different area. About a third of the way into the drift, my drag started peeling and peeling fast , so I dropped a buoy and the fun was on. First thought was a red, but with the braid I could feel a slight wobble and knew it was a pretty fiesty trout that had taken my Bone/Chartreuse cork. When I got her close you could see the silohouette of a really nice trout. She peeled some line, went under, over, all over the yak and then I finally got her in. She swallowed that cork and was bleeding, so this one had to go in the bag as she was fading fast. The ol' salt across the street gonna have some trout tonight . Measured her at 27 3/8" and she weighed 6lbs-12ozs. Not a bad way to start the day! Made a few more drifts and then another freight train and this one was a chunky 25" trout and weighed 6lbs-3ozs. Made a few more drifts and then got a phone call which shortened my fishing trip, but it was fun while it lasted!

    Time Fished: 7:30am-12:00n
    Tide: Outgoing and ripping out!
    Water: 59 deg +/-, clear to 3'
Bait used: Tsunami Cork (a cheap corky) bone with chartreuse back
Fish caught in about 4' of water

Way to fish, Chicken! I hate killin' the big ones, but if they're already bleeding you just gotta. Beauties.

Nice trout for sure, and it's Ok to keep one over 25" if you want.......bleeding or not! LOL
Drifting upper West bay shell chunking lures is always a good way to catch big fish in the winter.
