  • Isabel's redfish and crab adventure

Fished Saturday with Barry Young and his 10 year old daughter, Isabel. We left the dock at 11 and were back just after 3. The goal was to sight cast redfish, let Isabel catch a few, and possibly let Barry break ou the fly rod. The fish were there, right as we poled up onto the flat, we saw two. They didn't cooperate like last weekend, tide still had them somewhat scattered on the flat in areas that we just couldn't get to them. We fished around one flat and several small bayous in the area. Isabel caught her first redfish, From cast to landing, all by herself.

Barry ended up catching a few on conventional, then when Isabel started loosing interest, we took out the fly rod. The fish just didn't feel like showing themselves well and we only got a couple of bad angle shots. Isabel perked back up and asked her dad if he could stop messing with the fly rod and catch another fish, to which he obliged. The last one was the best of the day. Dad hooked the fish then Isabel got to do the hard work of fighting. The fish ended up being close to 27 inches!!

It wasn't fast and furious, but 5 reds landed in just under 4 hours. Had a few others hooked and saw plenty, nost when they were way to close to the boat to bite. All fished released, and I feel sure that we have added another catch and release angler to the list.

Almost forgot, when the reds weren't showing, Isabel was coaxing crabs into pinching the bull minnow and trying to lift them into the boat. She was a hoot.

Very nice! Still love being eye to eye with those rite at the boat even if they wont bite. In a kayak you kinda want to try and just grab em. Can't wait to book a trip one day.

Chris, it's just eye to eye with a mean advantage from up on the boat. I still love to be in the water and have tried to grab a few that got too close.. Looking forward to our day, glad that you have been catching them close to home. This fall is shaping up very nicely.
