Today was absolutely stupid!!!!! Daniel and I had been trying to plan a day to take his lovely wife Shannon out on a redfish hunt, and the day couldn't have gone much better. We got to the ramp about 6:45 and the wind was almost non existent. We loaded up and took off for a shoreline where we had caught them about two weeks ago. Much to our surprise, with easily 20 trailers already in the parking lot, there wasn't a boat where we wanted to go. We eased across to the opposite shoreline to start our drift, and saw a scattering of reds in up tight to the bank. My first cast with the she dog was rewarded with a nice blow up, but she missed. I guess that they were just getting warmed up.
We worked slowly down the shoreline and started seeing pods of finger mullet getting blasted. It wasn't a good day to be a little mullet!!
It didn't take long before the blow ups became hook ups. It was a mix of trout and reds, but the best blows by far were from the bigger redfish. We had Shannon fishing with a she pup in the halloween color and it didn't take too long before she pitched it to the right spot. Daniel had hooked a fish about ten minutes before and given her the rod, but this one was all her. She actually refused him at first, because she wanted to catch one on her cast. Her fish ended up being about 21, but it was her official first red on a top water!!!!!
She had a few trout on the pup as well. At about 8am the fish really started getting agressive, the bite was serious for about 30 until the wind came up from the SW. They would still blow up but the hookups slowed down dramatically. We repeated the drift about 3 times before we finally moved on to look at other water. We had some very exciting moments and some absolutely giant blow ups there when they were on.
We moved on and checked a few other spots before calling it quits about noon. Final tally was between 30 and 35 reds, and probably 25 to 30 trout. Most of the trout were on the small side, probably only about 15 that would make the slot. The reds ranged from about 20 to 25 inches, with probably 7 or 8 in the 5 to 6 pound class.
We had a blast catching fish and it was great to finally get Shannon out on the boat. The only thing that we didn't do was catch a flounder to take to Bryan at Lutes today. I guess it would help if I would take the topwater off, but I just can't break the addiction!
Tomorrow, it's off to another area to look for tournament reds with Mike Cubbage. I guess that I better stop typing and get some rest. More redfish ramblings tomorrow.
