Fished Friday Morning with Will Condry. The forecast was slightly off.
It wasn't too bad early but picked up to a nice stout breeze about 10. The plan was to sight cast to reds with the fly rods, but the reds apparantly missed the meeting where we discussed that. We only saw a few early even after poling the boat over a half a mile. I did however see a Sholemire moon as he an Thomas drove by me. Thank goodness they were a long way off!! Will hooked two on fly, the first was about 19 inches, and the second would have been about 24 but got up wind while we were blowing down the shoreline and broke us off.
When the wind picked up, we took cover in the marshes, and after a dry run to a flat that was previously accessible on higher tides. Moved to some open shorelines. We saw several fish crashing bait as the outgoing tide picked up speed. Most of them blasted bait only one time and then pulled their disappearing act. We tucked into some more protected water where we could slow the boat down again and found jsut a handful of fish moving. While poling through a small slew that was bordered by flooded marsh, we saw a fish move. Will, now throwing a bull minnow on one of my plug rods, decided to go ahead and cast over the grass that separated us from the fish and it was on!!!! This has to be one of the funniest redfish scenes that I have ever watched played out. The fish immediately took off for a narrow strip of grass, and with all the water, she managed to blast right through. What now?? She was stuck in the grass, and there was no way for us to get into the pond. I told Will to hang on and poled around the other side. We weren't even sure if the fish was still on, but as we got closer, we could see her there stuck against the grass. She had the line right through, but couldn't move any farther. We poled up, and grabbed her, shot pics and released. The line was so intwinedn in the grass that she had run through that we had to cut it. CRAZY!!
We had a good time, but only landed two of 5 bites. If you look at the pics, you will understand what this fish went through.
The grass strip directly in front of the boat is what she ran through!
