  • GRS report 8/28/10

Conditions set up our game plan nicely and the day started off well. Temp was 75 and we had a brisk N wind blowing about 15 to start. When I jumped in at the first spot, my ball sack retracted from the shock of the cool water......WOW
We started our first wade before sunup and had a few blow ups early. When the sun showed, it turned on. I was wading the middle of a flat about 3' over grass and sand. I caught a few undersize reds and trout and then I found a school of bigger fish running the shoreline in 1 1/2' of water. I hooked up with a BIG red and had a good long fight before she broke the back hook off my pink skitterwalk. 2 casts later I hooked up with another good red and landed this one that was a little over 6 lbs. I then caught big trout and 19" - 20 1/2" reds for the next hour with 2 of the trout at 25" and I had at least 10 over 20". Too bad it wasn't a trout tournament.
I saw Albert hook up a few times and put a few on his stringer so I let the little reds go. We headed back since a Yak was drifting in about 20 yds behind us and met at the boat. He had 2 that were bookends at 3 1/2lbs, so we put 2 in the livewell and headed to spot 2.
On the way to spot 2 we saw that there was a boat sitting in spot 3 (not good). We pulled up to spot 2 and there was a ton of bait and water color was pretty good. We were going to work a gut falling into a flat in about 1 1/2' of water with a sandy bottom. As soon as we pulled up a little john boat comes in and cuts us off. They pull up to the bank and got out and started throwing a cast net in the gut we were going to work and then started walking up and down the shoreline throwing the cast net.....WTF!
We moved down some and found a few fish. We caught trout and reds and Albert caught 2 that we culled our other fish with. He also lost 2 BIG reds on this spot, but at least we had upgraded one of the fish a little. We went back down to the gut and the yahoos were gone but it was all jacked up so we moved on to spot 3. The other boat was gone, so we were in good shape. We caught a bunch more trout and reds, but no upgrades. We were about to leave when I hooked up with another good fish that I thought was going to be a 7-8lb red. Albert got the net ready and I finally got her up to the boat and......Big Gafftop! S___T.....what a disappointment. We couldn't find another upgrade after that and time was running short so we headed out into the 20 mph East wind for the run back to the launch.....ouch!
We ended up weighing in 10.19 lbs and were 7oz short of being in the money. 15.89 won it I think. I believe that Capt Steve and DPop ended up 3rd with 15.1.
It was a great day on the water. We caught about 30 reds and 40 trout and would have done really well in a calcutta.
Albert needs to teach me how to hold a fish to make it look bigger in a picture!

Good fishing for sure. It was a tough day to alot of folks, so yall did good.

          1st place was Eastman/webb 15.89
2nd place was Capt Clint Sholmire/Brian Dietert 15.60
          3rd place was Sweezy/partner 15.??
4th place was Popavich/Soule 15.10 (would have been 15.60 but had one dead fish)

I dont remember the rest of the places. We didnt even bring our fish in since we only had 10#s or so, but figured we wouldnt be in the top 20. Guess we were wrong lol

Chip, considering the difficulties, that's a great showing. Next tournament, put some fresh hooks on that Skitterwalk.
