  • Flyfishing report for 8/14-8/15

Another two days of really slow sight fishing with the fly.Saturday I cast to 7 reds and caught two slot fish.Sunday I saw two very good trout but they were not interested along with two reds that spooked at the drop of the fly.Skunk on Sunday.I think that I am looking for fish in all the wrong places.

Don't feel bad, it's been like that in West for a while now. We need some rain this month and we should start seeing more fish.

At least you got on the water and got a couple to eat.

It is tough to take a skunk when I see the pictures that you post of Tails and bent rods w/ smiling clients.

I have been fishing those waters hard for almost 20 years now. I have seen way more skunk days that I would like to admit, but that's just the reality of fishing such a specific style like we are. Add to that, it's been a very different year than what I would have called the historical norm. I have really had to deviate from my typical haunts and look around a bunch to make things happen.

I fished the west end in the 60's and early 70's with Jack Garrison when he was part time at Cute-Rate.That was all hardware chunking.Almost all of my fly fishing had been in P.O.C. from mid 70's up to 07 when we moved to the Island.I will take your advise and gas up the Ospry and start looking into different areas that might offer some sight casting opportunities. It would be nice to have a list of more areas to go to when you can not get onto some of your chosen spots or if they are void of fish.

Think lower salinity right now. Until we see rain, that will be the pattern. I have seen a few in Christmas lately, and on some of the shell structures around the bay. They just aren't where I would expect them for this time of the year.

Sounds like you got the hardware indoctrination back then. There is a big defference between the two types of fishing, but there are some very distinct parallels. I love fly fishing, but I couldn't make it through certain periods of the year without having my baitcaster and topwaters!

Joe I'm ready when you are!! I'll chunk shrimps while you toss flies!!
"Hey Hillary, regarding the Benghazi Attack on 9/11-we'll just blame it on that movie, not my total lack of security. By the way, what's so significant about 9/11 anyway-was that a date my buddy Bill Ayers of the Weather Underground blew up a government building?" asked Obama to Hillary. BEAUTIFY AMERICA, RUN OVER A LIBERAL, THEN BACK UP AND SEE IF HE'S DEAD.
