  • Looking for evening reds.

Called up bluewaver for a run to West bay to try and find some evening reds running along the reefs. We met up at my place and launched out of the Galveston Bait Camp. It was about 6 pm already which makes things really nice because all the day runners are gone.

Wind was up around 10-15 mph SE. Water was in a nice green condition but I could not tell you the temp due to not hooking up my laurance. But Tide was high and it was only to move one inch while we were out there. Not a good tide flow for sure.

We headed out to a reef I like to jump out of the boat with my cast net to catch mullet. The bait was there but on the small side typical for this time of year. Water really felt warm though! After catching several dozen mullet and a few piggy perch we headed towards another reef that had been productive for reds in the past.

Sun was still up high and some of our bait was dieing in the livewell. Not sure what happend there but we still had a few dozen that made it untill dark. Before the sun set we used a few live baits because there was something running up and down the reef busting water. Dang the luck with lady fish and hard heads. Put on the dead one and they did not last at all. Those fish would hammer them as soon as they hit the water and you would come up empty.

Finally sun is setting and Bluewaver feels this repetitive pounding on his live bait. Scores up a nice keeper founder for the cooler. Then I had a short run and then my line lay slack then the water busts...TROUT! Reel in the slack and set the hook. Game on and one nice pencil trout over 20"! The fish must have spawned out. Then nothing for about an hour.

So with nothing going one I left one line out and we started picking up around the boat to secure things for our ride back. I started the motor to get the jump start but then my drag started screaming once again. Shut the motor off and managed another nice trout. So, two trout and a flounder on our first night trip of the year.

It sure beats the heat of the morning but the reds did not show up. I might head back out this weekend to do the same thing otherwise I have to work Saturday and that sucks. It will turn soon for some nice drag burning red fish after dark!
