  • not my day!!

met stingray at the rusty hook to do some surf fishing at daylight. we knew it was rough but thought we would try anyways and only caught 1 sandtrout. then we thought maybe we could find some cleaner bay water but that was a no go. it was pretty sandy and then the wind kicked up. stindray picked up a nice keeper red and before him i hooked up with a good red and got it to me and it pulled of. couple casts later i hook up with nice trout and it too pulls off. went in around 10 because i was hungry and he had to go home. went exploring new areas and found a place and looked great. finally got a good hit with a pearl chartruse devil and fought it in thinking it was a good trout but noo its a 23" snot ball. just my luck. went to another place only to find super muddy water and as i was walking out got hit by a stingray in the boot. thank god for raygaurds!!! left that place quick and went to the pass. had 2 hits but no hook ups and finally a hook up and followed by a pull off! decided to put the ole bone ss jr on and first cast wham knocks it out of the water. click click.. wham click click..wham click click wham.. hit it 5 times and never took it!! good trout missed. next cast same spot click click swoosh big fish on!! thought it was a good trout but got it to me and a 26" red is netted. had 3 more blow ups and all pulled off so i was getting alittle ticked!! about ready to head in when i see a big wake and a tail that looks like a reds so i throw to it and idk if i hooked it or what but it started coming straight at me. what was 1 fin now turned into 2 fins and black ones. OH #$@%!! grabbed my red real fast and slung it on my shoulder while a 4 foot blacktip comes splashing by. time to head in now. i watched him go all up and down the shorline looking for fish but he got nothing and was gone right when i got out.

today was just not my day but i got to fish so it was a succes

    good luck,
    taylor

That many lost fish might mean your drag was too tight (especially if you're using braid) or your not really setting the hooks. Sharpen those jigs and cross their eyes!
Sounds like you had more action than I've been having......lol

WTG !! Thanks for the interesting read...you got some action on a very tough day. You are a smart guy to wear those stingray guards...I think you will always wear them after being smacked. Be careful around the pass, and it's not being a sissy to even wear an inflatable PFD around there. That current can suck the sand right out from under your feet, I've had it happen to me. I wear a PFD around SLP and bayside. Had an older guy drown one year behind the pass by the deep guts. You never know what can happen around there. Good luck !!

the hook was probubly alittle dull on the jig heads but it was hard to feel and get a hook set in the wind but on the top waters when i felt them on thats when i set the hook and it pust have pulled out. maybe my drag was too tight but i use 10# mono.
i dont blaim you for wearing a pfd plugger. ive seen many people drown at the pass by the bridge. i only wade with someone else around there. top water bite only lasted for about 10 minutes for some reason and it was about 2 hours before sunset.

Okay, troutchaser213, what brand of guards did you have on and did it go through at all? You are smart to wear those, even they are a pain, cause you would really have a pain if one hit you. Could you tell exactly where it was? Great report, keep em coming and keep wearing those ray guards...
