Hit the water early this morning out of Jamaica Beach around 6:30. Headed east to Deer Island to fish some of the shell around it. Saw plenty of mullet but caught nothing. I was throwing several different lures on top and suspending. After about an hour I decided to hit a couple of reliable holes in the back lakes, first in Greens and then in Karakawa.
Got into the bayou I like, tied on a pumpkin seed tout with a yellow tail, and immediately stuck a nice flounder. I stayed on a drift and maybe six casts later I found the specs. Caught three back to back to back in maybe five casts and then they were gone. Drifted on a ways more and picked up a small red and another trout.
Being I wanted to see a lot of water today I moved out of there and headed over to a spot in Karankawa that generally turns out some fish for me. Water was moving good through a small opening I like so I slowly headed up there...threw into the current and nailed a nice little red about 18 ". Stayed in that area and caught another flounder, another rat red, and an undersized spec. I was needing that keeper red for the slam!!!!
Didn't happen. Threw a few more times but the current was going slack it seemed around 11:00...headed in.
All in all a very fun morning. Five trout, couple flounder, and four reds.
What's funny to me is that I have now had a couple of Academy trips where I wind up buying a $100 worth of assorted lures and tackle every time I go...yet it is the same old pumpkin seed tout that catches me fish every time. Maybe I oughta just dance with the one who brung me!
Here's a pic of one of the flatties...the pic of the red won't upload and I had none of the trout.
