  • Damn Sand Trout! West Bay 4-11-14

Sorry for the late report. Work is interfering with my fishing habits.

So I managed to drag myself out there this weekend for a couple hours. Stopped at Lutes to pick up some shrimp for some newbies I had on the boat. That was my second time there and though the shrimp were small Its nice that they are devoted to keeping the bait stocked. Launched at 2004 and headed out at sun up. What a beautiful morning. Water was glass, temperature was perfect. Even if I had gotten skunked it would've been worth the trip.

Anyways, fished the north side of the ICW between Chocolate and West Bay and within a few minutes had a double hookup. Pulled in an undersized speck and a nice 20 inch speck. But just like that the specks disappeared and the sand trout took over. By buddies bobbers couldn't hit the water fast enough before the they had a sand trout on. Needless to say they were excited but I was perplexed. We probably caught 70 sand trout in an hour with not one more speck. I tried different heights in the water all sandies, tried larger jigs, tried drifting farther back in the cut and the bite stopped. Went to 3 other spots a few miles away all sandies.

Im not one to complain about catching fish but these sand trout are like a disease I can't get rid of. Is it just that north area of the bay? Is it me? Its funny because both trips to this bay I have hooked decent sized specks for the first 3 fish in the boat and after that I'm overrun by sandies.

Id like to run a little farther south near the san louis pass but I'm still a little cautious as the maps look like its pretty shallow around there. Am being cautious for nothing is there a clear path or should I say clear? Bastrop looks enticing but really sketchy to me with all the reefs. Maybe I just just need to man up and take the risk. Thoughts?

If sand trout are your thing I've got the hook up. PM me for gps locals. Haha. Oh, bite was on Live shrimp, chartreuse Jig heads, and cut sand trout on a Carolina rig.

Hey, you did well, just toss the specs and reds back and take the sandies home to fry.
Any day you catch fish is a great day!!

          Nah, I was over in Hall's. I don't have a boat anyway.

Indeed it was Rocky! Thanks for pulling up.
We had a blast with the sand trout and dink specs. My gear was covered with scales when I got home.

...Bruce, I am headed back down there in the next few days as I missed a true saddle blanket down by the red crab trap in the lake!

...will do Brother. The one I got to the boat and lost would make a nice throw rug in your front room for sure! They are all in that "getting place" right now. I figure that it will be about a month or so before those like that start moving out and heading offshore.
