  • Hammered em in west bay! 3-2-13

Got up early with my buddy Jacob and headed down to bayou vista to start a day of fishing with captain Thomas Barlow of Notorious guide service. We left bright and early with a good wind already blowing, knowing it was only supposed to get worse. So we headed to our first spot and made it there pretty quick. The rods were already rigged with the lures we would end up using all day. We started drifting the first spot and right off the bat Jacob picked up a 21" trout with another one a little smaller right behind it. We made our way down some and before I knew it Jacob was hooked into a 26" 8# red, his personal best. Not long after I hooked into my first red of the day around 24". We had our limit by 830. We stayed there till about 10 just picking reds left and right out of a pretty good sized school. I think we caught around 29 reds on the same soft plastic lure. All but a few were in the upper half of the slot, and pretty hefty.

About 10 am Thomas asked if we wanted to try and go find some trout. The wind had picked up some and made it pretty hard to even feel bottom with a jig. We hit a few different spots and got bites but nothing really hammered it, so we went back to play with the reds for a while. By now the wind and turn of tides had dropped the water level quite a bit and muddied up the water. We could still see them boiling but couldn't get them to bite. We tried another hole really close and managed a few bites before the wind got the best of the situation.

So on our way in Thomas says he wants to stop at one more hole and see if we can't pick up a few flounder. With the winds at our backs we started our routine. Before long we were hooking up and getting them about to the boat before they would spit the hook. We made a couple more passes at the spot picking out 4 flounder and losing probably half a dozen at the boat. We also caught 1 speck at this location.

For the conditions provided Thomas put us on the fish! He did a really good job at finding them and getting us on them! We both used the same lure all day and as a matter of fact the lure was still on the rod when it was put up! It was a red shad tidal surge split tail mullet!

It was a great trip we had a blast! I can't wait to do it again! Capt. Had more pictures than I do, hopefully he'll post em up. I was busy catching fish, didn't have time to take pictures.
